Winless St George Illawarra are poised to bring back Kyle Flanagan, son of former coach Shane Flanagan, after rookie halfback Kade Reed was ruled out for up to three months with a finger injury.
Reed ruptured a tendon in his finger during Saturday's loss to Newcastle and underwent surgery on Tuesday, causing him to miss the last-placed NRL club's field training session. His absence paved the way for Kyle Flanagan and Daniel Atkinson to train in the halves, with Atkinson returning from a hand injury.
Interim coach Dean Young had given teenager Reed his NRL debut on Anzac Day and had hoped to provide him with more opportunities in first grade. Instead, Flanagan's exile is set to end after just two games, as the Dragons aim to snap a 13-game losing streak against Penrith during Magic Round on Sunday.
More to come...
