North Queensland Cowboys five-eighth Jake Clifford has declared his hunger to secure a permanent spot in the club's halves after experiencing a rotating role throughout the 2025 NRL season.
The talented playmaker has found himself sharing duties with experienced campaigners Chad Townsend and Tom Dearden, creating both competition and uncertainty within the Cowboys' spine.
A Season of Musical Chairs
"It's been challenging," Clifford admitted when discussing the rotational policy implemented by coach Todd Payten. "Every player wants consistency in their position, but I understand the coach has to make decisions based on form and opposition."
The 26-year-old has shown flashes of brilliance throughout the season, particularly with his kicking game and organisational skills, but has struggled to string together consecutive games in his preferred position.
Proving His Worth
Clifford's determination to cement his spot stems from his belief that he offers something unique to the Cowboys' attacking structure. "I've been working on my combination with the outside backs and developing my running game," he revealed.
"The competition for spots has actually brought out the best in all of us. Chad and Tom are quality players, and pushing each other every day only makes the team stronger."

With several crucial matches remaining in the season, Clifford knows every performance counts. "My focus is on controlling what I can control - my preparation, my attitude, and my performance when I get the opportunity," he stated.
