Payne Haas Reveals Family and Wayne Bennett as Key Factors in South Sydney Move
Haas: Family and Bennett Drove South Sydney Switch

Payne Haas Opens Up on South Sydney Decision, Cites Wayne Bennett and Family

Brisbane Broncos prop Payne Haas has publicly addressed his move to the South Sydney Rabbitohs for the first time, revealing that master coach Wayne Bennett and personal family considerations were the driving forces behind his decision. The 26-year-old forward, speaking on Wednesday, refuted suggestions of a falling out with Broncos coach Michael Maguire, emphasizing their positive relationship.

The Bennett Connection: A Deep Personal Bond

Haas highlighted Bennett's significant role in his career and personal life as a key factor in choosing South Sydney. "The Bennett factor is real and easy to understand," Haas stated, noting that Bennett gave him his NRL debut in 2018 after convincing him to join Brisbane over Melbourne. Bennett later secured Haas on a lucrative six-year deal, but the connection runs deeper than football.

"My brother Chase was quadriplegic. He was disabled and Wayne had a son Justin who was disabled, and that's how we sort of connected," Haas explained. "I feel like our relationship started from that and he's someone I can trust and lean on. It wouldn't have been that easy if I didn't have Wayne there. I would have looked at other options."

Family Reasons Prompt Swift Decision

Beyond Bennett's influence, Haas cited private family matters that necessitated a quick move back to Sydney to be closer to his loved ones. "Some things the last couple of weeks before signing were happening in my life personally and privately," he said, choosing to keep details confidential. "As a partner and a father I had to make that decision pretty quick, and that was to move back down to Sydney and move close to my family. It was definitely hard. There were some sleepless nights before I made that decision, but I'm content with that decision and I had to make the call."

Denying Rift with Maguire, Focusing on Broncos Finale

Haas strongly dismissed rumors that his departure stemmed from disagreements with Broncos coach Michael Maguire. "It's BS to be honest. I get along with Madge a lot," he asserted, referencing their successful partnership that included an Origin win and last year's premiership. "We won Origin together, won a premiership and there's no sour taste or nothing like that ... no bad blood. We're on good terms and I'm going to enjoy this last year with him as well."

He acknowledged Maguire's initial shock but said the coach understood and supported his decision. "There's no sugarcoating it. He was a bit shocked and fair enough, but he understood my decision and he was happy for me. We've all moved on." Haas emphasized his commitment to the Broncos for his final season, with the team focused on winning another competition.

Contract Details and Personal Insights

Haas confirmed his deal with South Sydney aligns with Bennett's expected one-year extension until the end of 2028. "I've got two years there and a one-year player option," he revealed. He also addressed the social media curiosity around his Islamic name, Hakeem Haas, explaining it's used in religious contexts while he remains known as Payne among friends.

Legacy at Brisbane and Teammate Support

Since his debut in 2018, cut short by injury after three games, Haas has been a standout performer for the Broncos, earning player of the year honors six times in seven NRL seasons. His teammates have respected his decision, with Haas breaking the news via text after it leaked. "All the boys have been really good to me and we've just got on with business," he said, underscoring his dedication to the club until his move.
