Brisbane Broncos Take Firm Stance on Culture, Stand Down Winger Josiah Karapani
Brisbane Broncos captain Adam Reynolds has declared that the club's senior leadership group adopted a non-negotiable position regarding culture and behaviour, leading to the decision to stand down winger Josiah Karapani for one match. This move underscores the Broncos' commitment to maintaining high standards within the organisation, regardless of individual player status.
Karapani's Offence and Consequences
Josiah Karapani, who was a standout performer in last year's grand final victory, received a $1001 fine from Queensland Police and was charged with a public nuisance offence. The incident occurred in Fortitude Valley at approximately 3.30am on Saturday. As a direct result of this breach, Karapani will miss Saturday night's away clash against the Gold Coast Titans, highlighting the immediate repercussions of failing to adhere to club protocols.
Leadership's Unwavering Standards
Adam Reynolds emphasised the importance of upholding the club's culture, stating that the standards set by the Broncos transcend any single player or person within the organisation. He made it clear that everyone must align with these values or face potential time away from the team. Reynolds expressed confidence that Karapani is fully aware of his mistake and has apologised to the group, believing he will not repeat such an error in the future.
"It's crucial for everyone to understand that the culture and standards we are establishing here are above any individual," Reynolds said. "Josiah recognises his error and is sincerely apologetic. I am certain he won't make that mistake again. He is a vital part of our team, but unfortunately, he won't be available this week."
Leadership Group's Decision-Making Process
Reynolds explained that the leadership group gathered all relevant facts on Monday morning before making the difficult call to stand down Karapani. This deliberate approach ensured that the decision was based on a comprehensive understanding of the situation, reinforcing the group's role in enforcing club policies.
Ben Hunt on Club Expectations
Veteran player Ben Hunt, who is also part of the leadership group, highlighted the intense scrutiny faced by the Broncos in what he described as a "one-club town," despite the presence of the Dolphins. He noted that mistakes made by players are quickly exposed due to the spotlight on the club. Hunt acknowledged that some players, including Karapani, are still learning important lessons about professional conduct.
"When you are a Bronco, there is no hiding from poor behaviour," Hunt stated. "The club is massive here, and the attention is relentless. If you go out and make a mistake, it will be discovered. Kara is one of the boys learning these lessons, and I believe he will bounce back strongly."
Support for Karapani's Return
Hunt expressed his support for Karapani, describing him as a "good kid" who has been very apologetic. He noted that Karapani has trained diligently this week and is expected to continue working hard to earn his place back in the team. This backing from senior players indicates a balance between discipline and support within the squad.
Team Adjustments and Player Responses
With winger Grant Anderson sidelined for 10 to 12 weeks due to a knee injury, the Broncos have recalled Jesse Arthars to the wing and moved Gehamat Shibasaki from the bench to starting centre. Reynolds praised the professionalism of both Arthars and Shibasaki in handling previous selection disappointments, highlighting their positive attitudes and hard work.
"Jesse missed out late last year and early this season but hasn't complained; he's been super professional in training and a leader in Q Cup," Reynolds said. "Similarly, Gehamat didn't dwell on setbacks; he focused on training hard to get back into contention."
Injury Update and Key Training Session
The Broncos have named prop Payne Haas in the squad, who missed last week's win over the Dolphins due to a shoulder injury. Ben Hunt identified Wednesday's late training session as critical for Haas to demonstrate his fitness and readiness for the upcoming match. This focus on player availability and preparation remains a key aspect of the team's strategy as they navigate the season.
