Benji Marshall Explains Decision to Drop Teen Prodigy for Development

Wests Tigers coach Benji Marshall has publicly addressed his decision to drop 18-year-old Heamasi Makasini from the team, citing the need to support the young player's long-term development and manage his confidence issues. Marshall expressed strong backing for Makasini, emphasizing his potential and unique talent in the NRL.

Makasini's Recent Struggles and Omission

The teenage prodigy, who drew comparisons to rugby legend Jonah Lomu after a standout trial run against Penrith, was not named in the squad for Thursday's clash with Canberra at Leichhardt Oval. This move comes after Makasini faced challenges under the high ball during last week's narrow 21-20 loss to Brisbane, which was only his seventh NRL game.

Marshall praised Makasini's early-season performance, noting, "I want to praise him for how awesome he's been to start the season. He's 18 years old, coming in, playing centre — which is probably the hardest position to defend on the field — and he did a great job." However, the coach highlighted his role in managing pressure, stating, "Part of my job as a coach is also to know when to take the pressure off him."

Focus on Long-Term Growth and Confidence Building

Marshall cautioned against premature comparisons, saying, "It's just a good reminder for a lot of people out there that sometimes we go off early on young blokes by comparing them, unfairly, to some of the greatest athletes that ever played." He reaffirmed Makasini's value to the team, describing him as "a unique talent and someone we see as having a long-term future for us." Regarding the confidence issues, Marshall added, "He's having a bit of confidence issues at the moment, but he'll bounce back."

To aid in this recovery, Marshall has opted not to deploy Makasini in NSW Cup as he recovers from a minor foot issue, emphasizing that this is not a punishment. "A lot of people look at it when someone goes back to reserve grade like it's a punishment," Marshall explained. "Sometimes it's actually the best thing for you to go and learn your trade and get some confidence."

Team Changes and Upcoming Match

In Makasini's absence, Starford Toa returns from a foot injury to partner Taylan May at centre, while Luke Laulilii comes in on the wing alongside Sunia Turuva. Fullback Jahream Bula is fit to play after being knocked about in the Brisbane loss, as the Tigers, with a 4-2 record, aim to extend their encouraging start against the Raiders, who hold a 3-4 record.

Marshall's Admiration for Ricky Stuart

Marshall also spoke glowingly of Canberra coach Ricky Stuart, noting their shared preference for coaching from the touchline. "What I love about Ricky is his passion, I think you can just see there's no bullshit with him and he speaks his mind," Marshall said. "He's so passionate about his team — I love that. I love being on the sideline, because I feel like I'm more a part of the game, and feel the energy of the players and the team."
