The Western Roar withstood a fierce comeback from the Fremantle Sharks in round five of the WA Netball League, securing a narrow 52-50 victory to retain second spot on the ladder.
Roar Dominate Early Quarters
The Roar stormed out of the gates, establishing a commanding 16-8 lead in the opening quarter. This early dominance was largely driven by the sharp shooting of Asha Parsons and Sophia Lamers, who found their range early and punished the Sharks' defence. The Roar maintained their advantage throughout the second and third terms, controlling the tempo and keeping the Sharks at arm's length.
Sharks Fight Back
Fremantle refused to go quietly, however, dominating the final quarter. The Sharks mounted a spirited charge in the last three minutes, applying intense pressure and closing the gap. Despite their best efforts, they could not overhaul the Roar's lead, falling just short in a thrilling finish.
Demons Crush Jets
In other matches, the Southside Demons reinforced their hold on top spot with a comfortable 58-36 victory over the winless Souwest Jets. The Jets had shown promise in earlier rounds but were ambushed by a relentless Demons side, who exploded out of the blocks with a 22-6 first quarter. The Jets never recovered from that early deficit, as the Demons cruised to a straightforward win.
Warriors Rout Rangers
The West Coast Warriors made light work of the winless Rangers, posting a dominant 78-31 victory. The Warriors were in control from start to finish, scoring 18 or more goals in every quarter while holding the Rangers to single figures in each term. Zoe Harper was the star of the show, netting a massive 60 goals to surge ahead in the race for the leading goal scorer title. Myra Ugle fought hard for the Rangers but could not stem the tide.
Upcoming Fixture
The round will conclude on Sunday when Peel Lightning take on the reigning premiers, the Comets.
