Sasha Glasgow's Triumphant Return Fuels West Coast Fever's Victory
In a thrilling Super Netball 2026 clash, Sasha Glasgow made a spectacular return to the West Coast Fever, leading her team to a hard-fought 68-65 victory over the Sunshine Coast Lightning at RAC Arena on Sunday. The match showcased Glasgow's exceptional skills as she stepped up in the absence of key players, delivering a performance that underscored her value to the squad.
Glasgow Shines in Key Role for Fever
With the Fever facing uncertainty this season due to the absence of six-time league player of the year Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard, who is missing due to pregnancy, Glasgow proved she could be a game-changer. In her first game back since 2023, the goal attack scored an impressive five super goals, totaling 14 goals and a game-high 26 goal assists. Her chemistry with veteran goal shooter Romelda Aiken-George, who netted 54 goals from 63 attempts, was seamless, outplaying the Lightning's international-class defence across all four quarters.
The Fever's defence also rose to the occasion, despite missing half the team from last year's decider loss. They managed to contain the Lightning's star power until a late surge in the final term. The visitors scored 21 goals to 14 in the fourth quarter, including five super goals, but it was too little, too late as Fever held their nerve to secure the win.
Key Performances and Challenges
Former Fever captain Courtney Bruce had a difficult game, giving away 15 penalties against Aiken-George in less than a half and frequently arguing with umpires. On a positive note, the injury-hit Fever defence exceeded expectations. With Diamonds goal defender Sunday Aryang absent, Jamaican Kadie-Ann Dehaney stepped up with five gains and six deflections, effectively challenging West Australian shooter Donnell Wallam, who scored 53 goals including five super goals in her Lightning debut.
Dehaney combined well with England captain Fran Williams, who contributed five gains, to disrupt the Lightning's front court movement. Glasgow briefly worried the Fever camp when she appeared to injure her left ankle late in the third term, but she played through the pain, limping off the court post-game.
Emerging Talent and Tactical Battles
Young midcourter Jordan Cransberg made a strong case for Australian selection, delivering 31 feeds and 15 goal assists. She notably outperformed Australian captain Liz Watson, who was moved to wing attack but was effectively contained by Fever skipper Jess Anstiss. This tactical duel highlighted the depth and resilience of the Fever squad as they navigated key absences and injuries.
The Lightning's late comeback attempt, fueled by a series of super shots in the final term, added tension to the match, but the Fever's composure ensured they claimed this important early-season victory. This win sets a positive tone for West Coast Fever as they adapt to roster changes and aim for success in the 2026 Super Netball season.
