The unbeaten three-year-old King Of Light has cemented his status as the horse to beat in this Saturday's $1.5 million Group 1 Northerly Stakes (1800m) at Ascot, drawing a favourable barrier in the crucial gate allocation.
Favourite Firms After Ideal Barrier Draw
Prepared by leading trainer Dan Morton, King Of Light will jump from barrier eight and carries just 52kg in the weight-for-age feature. The gelding is a commanding $2.60 favourite with TABtouch, retaining his top spot in betting after an impressive victory in the WA Guineas (1600m).
Morton expressed confidence in his star galloper, who has won all five of his career starts. "He's a mint horse to train," Morton said. "He's so laid-back and he's getting the job done. He really raises the bar himself come race day and he's an exciting horse."
Pike Stays Aboard as Preparation Impresses
Champion jockey William Pike has confirmed he will ride King Of Light, choosing the favourite over other top contenders like Railway Stakes winner Watch Me Rock. The decision came quickly after the WA Guineas win, with Morton noting the attractive lightweight of 52kg was a key factor.
The horse's final major trackwork at Ascot on Tuesday morning, under the guidance of work rider Aaron Mitchell, was described as excellent. "He's given him a glowing report," Morton confirmed. "He's got a huge stride length on him and hits all the parameters you need to see in a good horse."
While the 1800m distance is new territory for the three-year-old, Morton believes it will suit. "All the indicators say it won't worry him," he said, "and you just need a good run."
Key Rivals and Stablemate's Challenge
The main threats in the market are Western Empire ($6), a previous runner-up in this race who drew barrier six, and Carbine Club Stakes winner Cosmic Crusader ($7) from gate nine.
Morton will also saddle up two other runners. Stablemate In Good Order is a $41 chance, while the promising filly Pure Excess ($18) faces a tougher task after drawing the wide alley 15. Pure Excess, a recent Champion Fillies winner, will carry only 50kg. "She's very, very fast. She's a weapon," Morton said of the filly, while acknowledging the wide gate is a significant hurdle.
The stage is now set for a thrilling edition of the Northerly Stakes, with the unbeaten favourite looking to extend his perfect record against seasoned weight-for-age competitors at Ascot this Saturday.
