Golden Easter Egg Heats Set Stage for Thrilling Semi-Finals

The Wheeler Kennels Golden Easter Egg, one of greyhound racing's most prestigious events, kicked off last Saturday with 67 contenders vying for glory. After intense heats at Wentworth Park, the field has been trimmed to 32 elite greyhounds, with four semi-finals scheduled for this Saturday, April 4. The top two finishers in each semi will advance to the grand final on April 11, where the winner will claim a staggering $300,000 prize.

Fastest heat winner was Slick Splits, a Victorian-trained greyhound owned in New South Wales but handled by trainers Tom and Andrea Dailly. Clocking an impressive 29.25 seconds, Slick Splits aims to secure the Dailly's third Golden Easter Egg victory, following previous wins with Grigorieva Bale in 2013 and Fernando Bale in 2015. Notably, both past champions were owned by the Wheeler family, who are sponsoring the event for the first time in 2026.

Country Classic Delivers Major Upset

In other racing news, the Ladbrokes Country Classic on March 28 witnessed a historic upset. Nangar Polly, trained by Arthur Langman, defied odds of $26 to win the $100,000 feature, which was postponed a week due to torrential rainfall on March 21. Favorites Victorian Without A Trace and local stayer Magpie Hector were overshadowed by Nangar Polly's surprising victory.

The final, set for Golden Easter Egg Final night on April 11, offers $25,000 to the winner. Last year's Magic Maiden champion, Taw Galaxy, has qualified for the Easter Egg semi-finals a year later, having achieved notable successes including winning the Group 3 Goulburn Cup and placing in the Group 2 Gosford Cup.
