Trainer Simon Miller is hoping Fabulous Dream can follow in the hoofprints of his talented stablemates after the gelding broke through for his first metropolitan victory at Ascot on Saturday.
Breakthrough Performance
The four-year-old son of Dream Ahead settled midfield under jockey Patrick Carbery before charging home to score a comfortable win in the 1500m handicap, beating the well-supported favourite, Red Can Man, by a length and a quarter.
Miller, who also trains Group 1 winners Perfect Jewel and Starry Heights, said Fabulous Dream had always shown promise but had taken time to mature.
"He's a horse we've always had a good opinion of, but he's been a bit of a late bloomer," Miller said. "He's got a great attitude and he's really starting to put it all together now."
Stable Comparisons
Miller drew comparisons between Fabulous Dream and some of his other successful gallopers, noting that he possesses a similar blend of speed and stamina.
"He's not as flashy as some of the others, but he's very consistent and he keeps improving," Miller said. "If he can keep progressing like this, there's no reason he can't measure up to the better horses in the stable."
The trainer indicated that Fabulous Dream would likely step up in class for his next start, with a possible tilt at black-type company later in the preparation.
Race Details
The victory was Fabulous Dream's third from 11 starts and took his earnings to over $120,000. The gelding was having his first start in metropolitan company after winning two of his previous four starts in provincial grade.
"We thought he was ready for the step up, and he's proved us right," Miller said. "Patrick gave him a beautiful ride, and he finished off the race really strongly."
Carbery, who has ridden Fabulous Dream in his last three starts, said the horse was becoming more professional with each run.
"He's still learning what it's all about, but he's getting there," Carbery said. "He's got a good turn of foot and he seems to handle the pressure well."
Future Plans
Miller said Fabulous Dream would likely have a short break before being aimed at some of the better handicap races during the summer carnival.
"He's pulled up well and he's come through the race in good order, so we'll see how he recovers and then make a plan," Miller said. "There are plenty of options for him, and I think he's got the ability to win a few more races."
The win capped a good day for the Miller stable, which also saddled up a winner earlier in the card with the promising three-year-old filly, Miss West Coast.
