A determined father and son from Geelong have reached a significant milestone in their extraordinary quest to cycle around the world, rolling into Adelaide after a challenging journey across Victoria and South Australia.
Pedalling with Purpose Across Continents
George Kohler, 58, and his 20-year-old son Josh embarked on their global adventure from their hometown of Geelong on March 10. Their mission is far more than a personal challenge; they are raising vital funds and awareness for the Ronald McDonald House Charities and the Make a Wish Foundation. The duo arrived in Adelaide on Saturday, April 13, marking a major checkpoint on their planned 35,000-kilometre route that will span dozens of countries over the next two years.
The pair are travelling entirely unsupported, carrying all their own gear and camping along the way. Their journey from Geelong to Adelaide was not without its tests. They faced relentless headwinds across the Coorong and battled the notorious hills of the Adelaide Mount Lofty Ranges, a true trial of their physical and mental endurance so early in the trip.
An Adventure Forged in Family and Philanthropy
The inspiration for this mammoth ride is deeply personal. George Kohler is a seasoned ultra-endurance cyclist, but this is his most ambitious project yet. For Josh, it is a unique opportunity to bond with his father and see the world from a unique perspective before pursuing his own career path. Their chosen charities hold special significance, as both organisations work to support children and families during incredibly difficult times.
"The ride is going really well," George reported upon their Adelaide arrival. He expressed that sharing this experience with his son has been incredible, though he joked about the dynamic, stating, "I'm not sure I'd recommend travelling with a 20-year-old for two years, but we're making it work." The journey has already strengthened their bond, with Josh gaining a profound appreciation for his father's resilience and navigational skills.
The Road Ahead: From Adelaide to the World
After a brief rest in Adelaide to resupply and repair their bikes, the Kohlers' route will take them north through the heart of Australia. Their planned itinerary includes:
- Cycling through the Flinders Ranges and into the Northern Territory.
- Traveling up to Darwin, from where they will fly to Singapore to continue the Asian leg of their tour.
- Navigating through Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas.
Their fundraising goal is set at $100,000, to be split equally between their two nominated charities. Every dollar raised will go directly to granting wishes for seriously ill children and providing a 'home away from home' for families with children in hospital.
The community, both in Geelong and along their route, has shown tremendous support. Their progress can be followed, and donations can be made, through their official social media channels and fundraising page. As they prepare to tackle the vast Australian outback, the Kohler duo serves as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved with determination, a strong partnership, and a heartfelt cause driving every turn of the pedal.
