Mitchell Starc Fires Back at Critics Over IPL Absence, Confirms Injury Rehabilitation

Australian cricket great Mitchell Starc has been compelled to release a public statement addressing his status for the Indian Premier League season, following what he describes as "heavily misinformed opinions" circulating from "certain individuals" within India. The left-arm fast bowler has not participated in any competitive cricket matches since the conclusion of the Big Bash League final on January 25, which marked the end of an exhaustive Ashes summer campaign.

IPL Start Delayed for Australian Pace Trio

This week, Starc was officially ruled out of the initial phase of the IPL tournament alongside fellow Australian pacemen Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood. The uncertainty surrounding Starc's availability specifically prompted prominent Indian cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle to raise questions about whether star players could face financial penalties for missing matches in the high-profile league.

"I see the coach of Delhi Capitals saying they are waiting to hear about Starc's availability," Bhogle wrote earlier this week. "That is disappointing because this is a very high-profile league with huge budgets and teams have a right to plan, to know what they are buying. The international calendar is known in advance and players and boards should be able to give guarantees unless there are unforeseen injuries or political developments. I foresee amounts deducted from contracts being greater than a per match value assigned."

Starc Reveals Injury Details and Criticises Media Commentary

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra also expressed concerns about Starc's situation and Cricket Australia's communication, noting the two-month break since the Big Bash League concluded. After initially maintaining silence on the matter, Starc has now broken his silence with a detailed explanation.

"Despite the opinions and views of certain individuals with their platforms in and through the Indian media, I'm currently rehabbing and managing an injury in my shoulder and elbow of which I didn't know the extent of during the Australian summer," Starc revealed in his statement.

The Australian pace spearhead didn't hold back in his criticism of commentators who he believes have overstepped their expertise. "These individuals have made some strong statements around involvement in the IPL and provided heavily misinformed opinions of players, preached them as facts, and claim to know my body better than me," Starc wrote.

Apology to Delhi Capitals and Commitment to Return

Despite his frustration with media commentary, Starc acknowledged the disruption his injury has caused to his IPL franchise. "With that said I do acknowledge this injury setback and timing is disruptive to the Delhi team and I apologise for that and to the fans for not being available for the early part of this season," he stated.

The Australian cricketer emphasized his commitment to the Delhi Capitals franchise, confirming that he remains in regular communication with team management. "I remain committed to join DC, are in continual communication updating the team and will continue to do what I can to be available for DC as soon as possible," Starc assured.

Recent Cricket Activity and International Retirement

Starc managed to complete the Big Bash League season despite suffering a shoulder scare during the finals series. The injury concerns have followed him through recent months, with the fast bowler also missing the T20 World Cup tournament held in February and March this year. This absence came after Starc announced his retirement from international T20 cricket late last year, though he continues to be available for Test and One-Day International formats for Australia.

The situation highlights the ongoing tension between international cricket commitments, franchise league obligations, and player welfare management in modern professional cricket. As Starc focuses on his rehabilitation program, the Delhi Capitals will need to adjust their bowling plans for the opening matches of the lucrative IPL season without their star Australian signing.
