Laurie Evans: How Perth Scorchers imports spend Christmas before BBL clash
Scorchers' Laurie Evans on balancing Christmas with BBL

Perth Scorchers batsman Laurie Evans has given fans a unique insight into how the team's overseas players navigate the festive season, balancing Christmas Day celebrations with crucial preparation for their Big Bash League blockbuster.

Learning from a Gabba thriller

The English import reflected on last week's high-scoring encounter against the Brisbane Heat at the Gabba, describing the match as "just crazy" with incredible batting from both sides. Despite a frustrating loss in a brilliant atmosphere, Evans noted the value of an early-season test against a strong opponent in a close contest.

He observed a current trend where teams winning the toss are choosing to bowl first, particularly in night games. "The dew sets in and the ball comes onto the bat a little bit better," Evans explained, adding that chasing provides the advantage of knowing exactly what's required, especially when planning the power surge.

He recalled the "sinking feeling" as Matt Renshaw dominated during the first six overs, before the Scorchers' bowlers wrestled back momentum. However, Brisbane's strategic use of the power surge ultimately proved decisive.

A different rhythm for the festive fixture

After returning from Brisbane and taking a day off, the squad immersed themselves in training for the Boxing Day clash with the Hobart Hurricanes at Optus Stadium.

Evans detailed how the club has adapted its routine for this marquee event week. A significant training hit-out and skills session was held on Tuesday, instead of the day before the match. The lighter session typically scheduled for a match eve was moved to Christmas Eve, allowing players to spend December 25th with their families.

"We're all adults - well most of us are - and we know what we need to do to be ready," Evans stated, emphasising the trust placed in players by coaches and staff to manage their preparation while enjoying the holiday.

Christmas routines and club camaraderie

Having spent several Christmases in Perth, Evans' family has established its own traditions. This year, they visited teammate Ashton Turner's home on Christmas Eve and headed to the beach early on Christmas morning before the crowds arrived.

With his wife Verity's family visiting from overseas, the day was focused on family time and avoiding the summer heat. Evans also highlighted the inclusive culture at the Scorchers, praising local players for their hospitality.

"The local players are all so good at getting around the imports like myself and Finn Allen at Christmas time," he said, recalling a previous Christmas spent with bowler Matt Kelly's family and noting the abundance of offers this year. "That's what makes the club so great."

With the festive celebrations complete, the focus now shifts to the challenge of facing the reigning champions. Evans and the Scorchers are eager to return to action in front of their home crowd at Optus Stadium.
