Perth Scorchers' David Payne declares availability for Renegades clash after whirlwind arrival
Scorchers' import Payne ready to play days after landing

Perth Scorchers' English import David Payne has put his hand up for selection in Wednesday night's crucial Big Bash League clash against the Melbourne Renegades, despite touching down in Western Australia less than two days ago.

Whirlwind journey from Dubai triumph to Perth

The left-arm fast bowler arrived in Perth on Monday evening following a chaotic 24-hour period. Payne played a key role in Desert Vipers' ILT20 final victory in Dubai on Sunday night, taking 3-42 from his four overs. After a brief celebration with teammates, he immediately embarked on an 11-hour flight to Australia.

"That's exactly the reason I wanted to fly out as soon as possible, to give myself the best possible chance of playing on Wednesday," Payne told The West Australian upon arrival. The 34-year-old was adamant about his readiness: "Certainly in my eyes I'll be available for selection and I'll leave that up to the team to decide what's best. But from my point of view I'm available to play."

Potential bowling shake-up for second-placed Scorchers

Payne's potential inclusion is part of a significant possible reshuffle of the Scorchers' bowling attack ahead of the Optus Stadium fixture. Fellow paceman Jhye Richardson is set to return to the side, while spinner Ashton Agar is in serious doubt due to a calf injury.

The Scorchers, currently sitting second on the BBL ladder, will train at Optus Stadium on Tuesday. Payne is expected to be on light duties as he proves his fitness to coaches. His arrival follows the Scorchers' third consecutive victory, where they restricted the Adelaide Strikers to 120 runs on home soil.

A dream return to Perth

For Payne, this represents a welcome return to a club where he has fond memories. He was part of the Scorchers' title-winning squad three seasons ago and spent the following season with the Adelaide Strikers. The Scorchers specifically drafted him last year as part of a strategy to bring back former players, including fellow Englishman Laurie Evans.

"I've got very, very fond memories of this place from a few years ago and I have kind of always dreamt to come back here to be honest, after that," Payne said, reflecting on his previous successful stint. The quick's experience and recent form in the UAE make him a valuable asset as Perth pushes for a top-two finish and another shot at the BBL championship.

The final decision on Payne's inclusion will rest with the Scorchers' coaching staff, who must weigh his obvious talent and desire against the potential fatigue from his gruelling travel schedule. His declaration, however, provides the team with a welcome selection headache as they prepare to host the Renegades.
