Sam Kerr Reflects on Fitness and Form After Matildas' Asian Cup Victory
Matildas captain Sam Kerr has expressed that her peak performance is still on the horizon, despite delivering a match-winning goal in Australia's 2-1 semi-final triumph over China at the Women's Asian Cup. The victory, secured at Optus Stadium on Tuesday night, propelled Australia into their first major tournament final in eight years, set for Sydney this Saturday against either Japan or South Korea.
Kerr's Goal-Scoring Prowess and Fitness Challenges
Kerr's fourth goal of the tournament marked her second consecutive decisive strike in knock-out games, continuing a remarkable run of six straight Matildas matches in Perth where she found the net. However, the star forward acknowledged that her fitness levels are not yet at their best, attributing this to the intense schedule of recent weeks. "I'm still not 100 per cent back to my best, that's probably going to take a little bit of time, but I feel pretty close," Kerr stated. She highlighted the challenge of maintaining energy throughout matches, noting, "I looked up at the 62nd minute and I was like, I don't know how I'm going to make it to the 90th."
Despite these hurdles, Kerr remains confident in her goal-scoring abilities, emphasizing the need to consistently position herself for opportunities. "I have a lot of confidence in myself when I get in front of the goal that I'll score and get in those positions, it's just about getting in those positions consistently," she explained.
Praise from Coach and Teammates
Coach Joe Montemurro lauded Kerr's all-around contributions, pointing out that her greatness extends beyond scoring. "Top strikers or top forwards are ones that can manage the moments in the game and understand, 'okay, I'm not involved because the game's a bit long, or I'm not getting the service,' but when that moment comes, she takes that chance," Montemurro said. He praised her link-up play, movement off the ball, and ability to adapt, calling these traits the hallmarks of a world-class player.
Teammate Caitlin Foord, who has played alongside Kerr for years, echoed this sentiment, noting Kerr's clutch performances. "That's why she's a world class player. You can be quiet for 89 minutes, if that's the case and she has one minute and she scores a goal," Foord remarked. She expressed joy at having Kerr back on the field, highlighting their effective partnership.
Kerr's Impact on Team Morale
Montemurro also highlighted the intangible benefits Kerr brings to the squad, describing her presence as uplifting. "Her presence or aura in and around the squad is immense. We just love having her around, from that perspective," he said. Kerr's belief in the team and passion for representing Australia have been key factors in boosting morale as they prepare for the final.
As the Matildas gear up for the championship match, Kerr's journey to regain full fitness and her unwavering confidence remain central to their hopes for success in Sydney.
