"A lot of the wickets we're playing on at present are certainly more seam friendly than spin friendly," Smith stated in a Christmas Day press conference. He added that even the injured Lyon might have faced omission. "If Nathan was here, we'd probably still be having the same conversation."
Pace Attack Takes Centre Stage
With no spinner, Australia's pace battery will carry the load. Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland are certain starters, with the final bowling slot a point of interest. Jhye Richardson appears the frontrunner for a fourth Test cap, praised by Smith for his "great set of skills" and ability to swing the ball both ways.
This strategic shift echoes a distant precedent from 2010, when a spin-light Australia suffered a heavy loss to England at the MCG. On that occasion, a young Steve Smith, then primarily a leg-spinner, bowled 18 overs.
