The Perth Scorchers have received a significant boost ahead of their crucial Big Bash League encounter, with wicketkeeper-batsman Josh Inglis released from the Australian Test squad to face the Sydney Thunder on Tuesday.
Test Release Opens Door for BBL Return
Inglis was made available for Scorchers selection after being dropped from the Australian side following the dramatic two-day Boxing Day Test loss to England at the MCG. Having played in the first two Ashes Tests, his early release from the national camp coincides with the Test match finishing ahead of schedule.
His return to the Scorchers line-up marks his first appearance for the franchise this BBL season. Inglis was already travelling to Sydney with the Test squad, making his integration into the Perth team seamless.
Scorchers Seek Turnaround After Consecutive Losses
Inglis's inclusion comes at a critical time for the Scorchers, who are looking to snap a two-game losing streak. His experience and firepower with the bat are expected to stabilise a middle order that has struggled for consistency.
Team balance is a key consideration for selectors. Inglis is likely to slot into the number four batting position, replacing Aaron Hardie, whose highest score this season is just 23 runs from three matches. An alternative could see Hardie moved down the order to number seven, potentially replacing Nick Hobson.
Furthermore, Inglis is expected to take over the wicketkeeping gloves from part-timer Finn Allen, a move that could prove vital on an Engie Stadium pitch in Sydney that traditionally favours spin bowling.
Short-Term Gain Before Test Recall
This will be a brief homecoming for the talented gloveman. Both Inglis and Hobart Hurricanes' all-rounder Beau Webster, who was also released for his team's Monday night match, are required to return to the Australian Test squad by December 31.
This schedule means neither player will be available for the highly anticipated New Year's Day clash between the Scorchers and the Hurricanes in Hobart. Inglis will also miss Perth's home game against the Adelaide Strikers on January 4 and their meeting with the Melbourne Renegades on January 7.
If not selected in the starting XI for the next Test, Inglis is almost certain to be retained by Australia as a potential concussion substitute, extending his absence from the BBL. For now, the Scorchers will be grateful for his timely reinforcement as they aim to get their season back on track against the Thunder.
