From Dapto to SCG: Cam Billett's dream job as assistant curator
Illawarra local lands dream SCG curator job

For Cameron Billett, the smell of freshly cut grass isn't just a pleasant aroma - it's the scent of a dream come true. The Dapto local has traded Illawarra's sporting fields for the hallowed turf of the Sydney Cricket Ground, where he now serves as assistant curator for cricket's biggest events.

From local roots to international stage

The 28-year-old's journey to one of Australian cricket's most prestigious grounds began in the Illawarra, where he played for the Dapto Canaries in rugby league and cricket. His passion for sports naturally evolved into maintaining the playing surfaces themselves.

Billett started as an apprentice at Figtree Bowling Club before moving to North Dalton Park with Wollongong City Council. There he gained valuable experience preparing cricket pitches for Sheffield Shield and England A tour matches, while also maintaining grounds for AFL fixtures during winter.

"I wanted to always do something in sports if I could," Billett admitted. "Playing obviously didn't work out too well - I wasn't too good at it. So I went into the ground side of things and I haven't looked back. It's been a great choice."

A family tradition in turf management

Greenkeeping runs deep in the Billett family. The fifth-generation Dapto local and former Kanahooka High School student comes from a long line of turf professionals.

"I'm a second-generation greenkeeper. My brother was a greenkeeper as well, so there's been a few of us in the family," he explained. "It's kind of a family trade."

His uncle Lionel Billett played a crucial role in his career development, having served as a curator at North Dalton Park for years and securing Cameron his first job at Figtree Bowling Club.

"I'm only early into my career up here but I'm hoping to put the Illawarra on my back a little bit and show that we do and can produce really good curators," Billett said proudly. "We have for a long time."

Preparing for cricket's biggest stage

Since joining Venues NSW at Moore Park in June 2024, Billett has worked his way up through the ranks to become assistant curator at the SCG. The promotion comes just in time for cricket's most anticipated events.

"It doesn't get any bigger. This is pretty much the golden egg of cricket," Billett said of preparing wickets for the Ashes series and NSW's star-studded Shield team. "It's the grand final of grand finals really for us."

Head curator Adam Lewis has welcomed Billett's contribution to the team, stating: "Cameron's been a great member of the SCG team since June 2024 and I'm delighted to have him by my side for the big summer ahead, including the New Year's Test against England."

The Dapto local describes the opportunity as "very exciting" while acknowledging the pressure that comes with maintaining one of Australia's most famous cricket grounds.

Expert lawn care tips from a professional

For homeowners who share Billett's passion for perfect turf, the SCG assistant curator offers five professional tips for maintaining an immaculate lawn:

  1. Cut it low after winter to remove winter thatch buildup
  2. Cut consistently - at least three times weekly to maintain even height and prevent thatch accumulation
  3. Provide ample moisture - grass can suffer after just three hot days without proper hydration
  4. Minimize wear and tear - challenging with children and pets but crucial for lawn health
  5. Maximize sunlight exposure - heat and sunlight are essential for optimal grass growth

Billett's journey from local Illawarra groundsman to preparing pitches for international cricket stars serves as inspiration for anyone passionate about turning their love for sports into a rewarding career.
