Aaron Hardie has been named Western Australia's Sheffield Shield captain for the 2026-27 summer, taking over from Sam Whiteman who stepped down after four seasons in the role.
Hardie's Rise to Leadership
The 26-year-old all-rounder has been a key figure for WA since his debut in 2019-20, contributing with both bat and ball. Hardie has scored over 1,500 first-class runs at an average of 38 and taken 35 wickets, showcasing his value as a genuine all-rounder.
WA coach Adam Voges praised Hardie's leadership qualities, saying, "Aaron has shown maturity beyond his years and commands respect in the dressing room. He leads by example with his performances on the field."
Whiteman's Legacy
Sam Whiteman, who captained WA to two Sheffield Shield titles in 2021-22 and 2022-23, decided to step down to focus on his batting. The 32-year-old wicketkeeper-batter said, "It's been an honour to lead this group, but I feel it's the right time to hand over the reins. I have full confidence in Aaron to take the team forward."
Whiteman will continue to play as a specialist batter and wicketkeeper, providing experience and support to the new captain.
New Era for WA Cricket
Hardie's appointment marks the beginning of a new era for Western Australian cricket, with the team aiming to build on recent successes. The Warriors have been dominant in the Sheffield Shield, winning three of the last five titles, and will look to maintain that standard under Hardie's leadership.
Hardie expressed his excitement about the role: "It's a huge privilege to captain this team. We have a strong squad with a great mix of youth and experience, and I'm looking forward to leading them out."
The 2026-27 Sheffield Shield season is set to begin in October, with Western Australia aiming to defend their title.
