Perth Scorchers' young gun Cooper Connolly has thrown his full support behind the franchise's significantly reshaped bowling unit, declaring the new-look attack has what it takes to fire in the upcoming Big Bash League season.
Scorchers Forge New Path After Key Departures
The Scorchers face the upcoming BBL|13 campaign without several established bowling stars. The club has seen the departure of pace legend Jason Behrendorff, who moved to the Melbourne Stars, alongside the retirement of veteran seamer Andrew Tye. Further changes include English import David Payne not returning and the absence of speedster Matt Kelly.
This exodus of experience has paved the way for a major refresh of the Scorchers' bowling stocks. The Perth-based side has moved to sign a fresh cohort of talent, headlined by the exciting Lance Morris. The express fast bowler, known as 'The Wild Thing', is set to bring serious pace to Optus Stadium after being acquired from the Melbourne Renegades.
The recruitment drive also includes English left-arm quick Liam Dawson and local paceman Sam Fanning. They join the remaining core of proven performers like frontline spinner Ashton Agar and the reliable Aaron Hardie, who is expected to shoulder a greater bowling workload.
Connolly's Vote of Confidence in Fresh Faces
All-rounder Cooper Connolly, one of the Scorchers' most promising young talents, has no doubts about the capability of the remodelled attack. "I think our bowling attack is still very strong," Connolly stated emphatically.
He pointed to the existing quality within the squad, highlighting the importance of Agar and Hardie. "We've still got Ash Agar, we've still got Aaron Hardie who will probably bowl a few more overs this year," he explained. Connolly is particularly enthusiastic about the new signings, believing they add a potent and dynamic edge. "And then we've brought in Lance Morris, who is seriously quick, and Liam Dawson, a left-arm orthodox who can also bat. I think our attack is looking really good," he added.
Connolly's confidence stems not just from names on a team sheet but from observed performance. He revealed the new recruits have already made a strong impression during pre-season preparations. "They've been awesome. Lance has bowled some serious wheels in the nets and Liam is a very skilful bowler," Connolly said, underscoring the immediate impact of the newcomers.
Building on a Legacy of Success
The Scorchers are the most successful franchise in BBL history, having claimed the title five times. This legacy of winning creates a unique environment and a high standard that new players must meet. Connolly believes the incoming bowlers are adapting perfectly to the famous 'Scorchers way'.
"They've fitted in really well. They understand the way the Scorchers play and what's expected," he noted. This seamless integration into the team's culture is seen as a critical factor for the attack to gel quickly when the tournament begins.
The team's first challenge in BBL|13 will be a tough away encounter against the Brisbane Heat at the Gabba on December 13, 2023. It will be the first real test for the revamped bowling line-up against top-level opposition. Connolly and the Scorchers faithful will be hoping his confident predictions translate into early wickets and victories as the team aims to add a sixth championship to its storied history.
