Cricket Australia will unleash Cameron Green as a genuine allrounder when the Ashes series begins on Friday at Perth Stadium, marking his return to Test bowling after nearly two years on the sidelines.
Green's Long Road Back to Bowling
The 26-year-old hasn't bowled in a Test match since undergoing back surgery more than a year ago, with his recent international appearances limited to batting-only roles across four Tests since returning in June. However, Green successfully bowled 16 overs during Western Australia's thrilling Sheffield Shield victory against Queensland last week, proving his fitness for the demanding five-Test series.
"It's been a really slow build-up," Green admitted on Tuesday. "Probably would prefer a few more competitive overs, but at the same time, it's a double-edged sword - you come into a series so fresh. Especially for a five-Test series, you want to be as fresh as you can by the back end."
No Restrictions on Australia's Prized Allrounder
When questioned about potential limitations on his bowling workload against England, Green delivered a straightforward response: "No restrictions." The talented cricketer elaborated that "when you get into Test cricket, there's no need for restrictions, just see how the game goes. I'd be happy to put my hand up whenever."
While his bowling role appears settled, uncertainty remains about Green's batting position in the Australian lineup. After moving up to No.4 following David Warner's Test retirement in January 2024, Green found himself batting one position higher upon his return this year. However, with Marnus Labuschagne expected to reclaim the spot he temporarily lost during the Caribbean tour, selectors may shift Green back to No.6 where he began his Test career.
Test Debuts Loom as Australia Finalises XI
The 32-Test veteran revealed he hasn't received confirmation about his batting position for the summer, noting "I'm just so grateful that they see me as someone who could do all those positions. I've moved around quite a bit in the Test team." Green praised the coaching staff for making players "feel really secure regardless of where you're playing."
Australia's team composition could see two potential Test debuts if Green returns to No.6. Jake Weatherald appears set for his baggy green as Tasmania's adopted opener, while South Australian quick Brendan Doggett will likely receive his first cap following Josh Hazlewood's hamstring injury.
Wicketkeeper Alex Carey expressed confidence in both potential debutants, particularly highlighting Doggett's recent form. "He comes into this squad with great form, he should have great confidence," Carey said. "He won us the Sheffield Shield final and again has started this season really well."
Carey noted that both Weatherald and Doggett benefit from extensive domestic exposure, making their transition to Test cricket smoother. Australian selectors are expected to finalise their playing XI as early as Tuesday night.
