In a stunning turn of events, former Australian Test batsman Joe Burns has been sensationally dropped from Italy's squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, just months after masterminding their historic qualification.
Contractual Wrangle Ends World Cup Dream
The Italian Cricket Federation (FCRI) confirmed that Burns will not be part of the World Cup squad, with South African-born all-rounder Wayne Madsen appointed to lead the side instead. The decision comes despite Burns captaining Italy to their maiden T20 World Cup berth during the European qualifiers in July.
The federation stated that while preliminary discussions about Burns's availability had occurred in recent weeks, no final agreement was reached and no contract was formalised. This contractual impasse has ultimately cost the 34-year-old his place in the tournament.
Technical Assessments Favour Madsen
"At the same time, internal technical and organisational assessments have led to Wayne Madsen being identified as the most suitable choice to lead the team," the FCRI said in their official statement.
While the federation mentioned issues concerning team stability influenced their decision, they did not provide specific details. Madsen will now lead Italy in their upcoming tour against Ireland before they head to the World Cup, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka starting February 7.
Speculation and a Personal Journey
The move has raised eyebrows in cricket circles, with Australian great Jason Gillespie suggesting there might be more to the story. "Interesting this. My mail is it is not a performance issue. Reckon we will hear more about this," he tweeted.
Burns's journey to Italian cricket was deeply personal. He announced his move to Italy in May 2024 as a tribute to his late brother, Dominic, who had passed away three months earlier. In an emotional Instagram post, Burns, who wore his brother's number 85 on his shirt, spoke of his ongoing grief and how the shirt would "carry on his spirit".
The Queenslander played 23 Tests for Australia between 2014 and 2020, scoring 1,442 runs. He also represented the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League. His absence now leaves a significant void in an Italian side preparing for their biggest cricketing moment on the world stage.
