Criticism Sparks a Call to Action
The incident began when cricket commentator Bharat Sundaresan expressed his dismay at the state of the hill following the opening day's play. Taking to social media, he highlighted the significant amount of litter left behind by spectators, despite the superb turnout and hot conditions.
His post ignited a debate online, with opinions divided on the responsibility of fans versus venue management. However, rather than letting the discussion fade, the Barmy Army decided to lead by example.
The Fans Take Charge
After the conclusion of Day 2, a group of England supporters, spearheaded by superfan Charlie, took matters into their own hands. Charlie documented the initiative on his Instagram, showing a trip to a local Coles supermarket to purchase rubbish bags before distributing them among fellow fans.
"Bit of a mess yesterday so because back in England we try our best to keep it clean, I brought in 20 bin bags from Coles this morning," Charlie explained in his video. He emphasised the group's desire to leave the historic ground as they found it, after a day of vocal support for their team.
Other fans joined in, with one noting how simple it would be if everyone just picked up one piece of rubbish. The clean-up effort was met with visible appreciation from Adelaide Oval staff, who were seen thanking and hugging the volunteers.

South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas publicly commended the Barmy Army on social media, calling it a "class act" that added to the great atmosphere of the Ashes series. He warmly stated they are always welcome back to South Australia.
