Applecross Cricket Club Celebrates Milestone Hosting National Inclusion Championships
The Applecross Cricket Club has achieved a significant milestone in its commitment to inclusive sport, serving as a co-host for the 2026 National Cricket Inclusion Championships. This prestigious event was held for the first time in Western Australia from January 12 to 16, marking a proud moment for the local cricket community.
Championships Bring Together Diverse Teams Across Australia
The championships featured an impressive lineup of 20 men's and women's teams from across the nation, each representing their State in one of three divisions: the blind and low vision division, the intellectual disability division, and the deaf and hard of hearing division. This gathering highlighted the growing importance of accessible sporting opportunities for athletes of all abilities.
Applecross Cricket Club president Mark Hullett expressed his enthusiasm for the event's success, noting it was a huge milestone for cricket in WA. "Seeing so many participants take the field — and so many volunteers step up to support them — was truly inspiring," Mr Hullett said. "WA should be incredibly proud of how the championships were delivered, and we hope to have the opportunity to host again in future years."
Cricket Australia Ambassador Nathan Lyon Praises the Event
Cricket Australia's national ambassador for cricketers with a disability, Nathan Lyon, was among the spectators at the championships. He shared his admiration for the athletes and the spirit of the game. "I thoroughly get a kick out of coming out here down to Murdoch today just to watch the vision-impaired game," Lyon told Cricket Australia. "It's an incredible sport and that they're able to come and represent the States and travel across Australia and make friends around the world is pretty cool."
Lyon added, "In my eyes it's the best game in the world and you're able to make friends and challenge different skill sets." His presence underscored the national support for inclusive cricket initiatives.
Commitment to Making Cricket a Game for Everyone
Mr Hullett emphasized that the Applecross Cricket Club is dedicated to ensuring cricket is accessible to all, regardless of ability, gender, or experience level. This event demonstrated the tangible benefits of such inclusivity, fostering community engagement and athletic excellence.
The club encourages anyone interested in playing cricket or getting involved to reach out. This call to action aims to build on the momentum from the championships, promoting ongoing participation and support for inclusive sports programs in the region.
