The identity of Tasmania's eagerly awaited new entry into the Women's National Basketball League has finally been revealed. The team will be known as the Tasmania Jewels when they debut in the 2026/27 season.
A Crown Jewel for the Queen Ant
The unveiling comes four months after the state secured the league's ninth licence, marking the first expansion of the WNBL in almost two decades. The name 'Jewels' is directly tied to the 'Queen Ant' motif of the men's team, the Tasmania JackJumpers, creating a cohesive sporting family.
"Tasmania is the Jewel in the crown of Australia and now the Jewel in the crown of the Queen Ant, and a force to be reckoned with in the WNBL," said Tasmania Basketball chief executive Christine Finnegan.
She described the new brand as representing the "unique beauty" of Tasmania and the "unbreakable resilience" of both the team and the wider community. The brand was developed following an extensive community engagement campaign.
Logo, Colours, and Key Connections
The primary logo cleverly integrates several symbolic elements. It features the shape of Tasmania positioned as the jewel at the centre of a crown, which is formed from the shape of ant mandibles. The face of the queen ant is also incorporated, mirroring the design approach of the JackJumpers.
The team's colour palette will maintain the state colours of Forrest green and Mandible yellow, with the addition of a new 'eucalyptus green' as a feminine accent colour.
Ownership of the Jewels will fall under Altor Capital, which purchased a controlling stake in the Tasmania JackJumpers in July 2025.
Boosting the Women's Game Nationally
WNBL CEO Jennie Sager welcomed the new team, stating it highlights the league's growing momentum and commitment to creating more opportunities across the country.
"I'm so excited to welcome the Tassie Jewels to the WNBL. Tasmania's love for the game runs deep, and now that passion has a new home on the national stage," Sager said. She emphasised that the club will create 10 additional roster spots, opening new pathways for aspiring female athletes.
To celebrate the launch, the club is offering a 'Got the W' foundation membership for $10. This includes a bumper sticker, digital membership, and priority access to future season seated memberships.
The announcement solidifies Tasmania's growing presence in national basketball, with the Jewels set to build on the passionate foundation established by their JackJumpers counterparts.
