Illawarra Hawks fans have received the ultimate Christmas present, with co-captain Sam Froling cleared for a dramatic return to the NBL court on December 25.
Long Road to Recovery After Championship Series Heartbreak
The star forward's comeback follows a gruelling rehabilitation from an achilles rupture suffered during the second quarter of game four in last season's championship series. Froling underwent surgery in March, embarking on a nine-month journey back to fitness.
Hawks' head of medical and physio, Scott Muttdon, revealed the stringent benchmarks Froling had to meet. "Sam has worked extremely hard throughout his entire recovery," Muttdon said. "His approach to the grueling process has been inspiring to say the least and he has done so with a resilient attitude." It is understood Froling was required to hit 95 per cent fitness across all testing categories to receive medical clearance.
Eager Star Ready for Freeway Rivalry Clash
Froling will make his long-awaited return in the Hawks' Christmas Day showdown against freeway rivals, the Sydney Kings, at the WIN Entertainment Centre. The timing provides a massive boost to the Illawarra squad as they navigate the current season.
Expressing his eagerness, Froling admitted the view from the sidelines had been challenging. "It has been tough sitting courtside watching the championship run and games this season cheering them on," he said. "I am looking forward to getting back in the trenches, having an impact, and continuing to build on the foundation they have laid this season."
How to Watch the Christmas Day Hoops Action
Basketball enthusiasts won't want to miss a moment of the star's return. The highly anticipated Christmas Day game tips off at 8:30 pm and will be broadcast live on ESPN. Fans can also attend in person at the venue in Sydney for what promises to be a festive and fiery derby clash.
Froling's return marks a significant moment for the Hawks, injecting experience and leadership back into the line-up as the team looks to capitalise on the momentum of his Christmas miracle return to the NBL.
