Wildcats Coach Returns to National Team Setup
In an exciting development for Australian basketball, Perth Wildcats head coach John Rillie is making his return to the Australian Boomers coaching staff. The respected mentor will be part of the national team's campaign during this month's crucial World Cup Asian Qualifiers, marking his first involvement with the Boomers since 2021.
Proven Track Record with National Team
Rillie brings significant experience to the role, having previously served as an assistant coach during the Boomers' historic Olympic bronze medal campaign in 2021. His connection to the national team runs even deeper through his playing career, where he represented Australia from 1997 to 2004, including competing at the Athens Olympics in 2004.
The now-Wildcats coach expressed his enthusiasm about returning to the national program, where he'll work alongside associate head coach Dean Vickerman. "Excited to be back involved with the Boomers," Rillie stated. "Any time you get to represent your country, in any role, it's a great honour."
Strong Coaching Team Assembled
Basketball Australia has assembled an impressive coaching group for the upcoming qualifiers. Joining Rillie and Vickerman are NBL assistants Kerry Williams from Adelaide and Luke Brennan from South East Melbourne.
Basketball Australia executive general manager Jason Smith praised the collective expertise of the coaching staff. "There's an incredible level of experience and expertise in this group and we're committed to the process of bringing in complimentary coaching staff," Smith said.
The Boomers will face New Zealand in the first window of Asian qualifiers for the 2027 FIBA World Cup. The first game is scheduled for November 28 in Hobart, followed by the second match in Wellington on December 1.
In squad news, Perth sharpshooter Elijah Pepper has earned selection alongside former Wildcats champion Nick Kay and Geraldton product Alex Ducas, providing strong Western Australian representation in the national team setup.
