Bruce McAvaney Backs Gout Gout as Favourite in Melbourne's 200m Showdown
Legendary sports broadcaster Bruce McAvaney has declared that teenage sprinter Gout Gout should start as a slight favourite in Saturday night's highly anticipated 200m event at the Maurie Plant Meet in Melbourne. McAvaney emphasised that this race shapes up as a thrilling three-way contest, with Gout seeking redemption over fellow Queenslander Lachlan Kennedy, who defeated him last year, while also keeping a watchful eye on Irish athlete Ben Richardson.
McAvaney's Analysis of the Top Contenders
In his assessment, McAvaney stated, "Gout has to start favourite, but not much in front of Lachie." He praised Kennedy's versatility, noting that while the 100m is his best event, he has proven to be an exceptional 200m runner. The broadcaster described the matchup as "intriguing," highlighting the focus on the young star Gout, the established talent of Kennedy, and the unknown factor of Richardson.
McAvaney elaborated on Richardson's impressive background, pointing out that the athlete was born in Ghana, has raced for South Africa, and is a world junior medallist and Olympian. "He's broken 10 seconds for 100 metres, he's broken 20 seconds for 200," McAvaney said, adding that if Richardson is in prime condition, the Australian sprinters will face a significant challenge.
Gout Gout's Record-Breaking Journey
Gout Gout has already made history in his young career. At just 16 years old, he broke Peter Norman's 56-year-old Australian 200m record of 20.06 seconds, set at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, by clocking 20.04 at the 2024 Australian All Schools Championships. He further improved this time by 0.2 seconds in the Czech Republic last June and ran a 19.84 in Perth, albeit with an illegal wind assistance. Gout has also demonstrated speed in the 100m, recording times under 10 seconds.
Meanwhile, Lachlan Kennedy, 22, set his personal best of 20.26 seconds to beat Gout last year and will also compete in the 100m event against rivals like Australian sprinter Rohan Browning and New Zealand's Tiaan Whelpton.
Challenging Conditions and Key Performances
McAvaney does not anticipate record times on Saturday night due to the typically tough sprinting conditions in Melbourne. "You normally get headwinds at that track, and it's going to be pretty cold. So, I think that time is not so important on Saturday night, but the outcome is," he explained.
He highlighted Gout's recent performance at the Queensland championships as crucial, where the teenager won both the under-20 100m and 200m titles despite battling a head cold and facing a stiff headwind. "He proved for himself that everything doesn't have to be absolutely going to plan to still produce a really great performance," McAvaney remarked, emphasising the importance of this resilience.
Peter Bol's Stellar Form and Commonwealth Games Ambitions
In other events, West Australian three-time Olympian Peter Bol will aim to continue his impressive form in the 800m. Bol is coming off a victory at the Perth Track Classic in February, where he set a meet record of 1 minute 43.89 seconds. McAvaney described the field as "hot," with competitors including Australians Peyton Craig, Bob Abdelrahim, Daniel Williams, and Luke Boyes, along with New Zealander James Preston.
Bol enjoyed a stellar 2025, setting a personal best of 1:42.55 in Monaco and recently finishing fourth at the world indoor championships in Poland with an Oceanian record of 1:45.14. McAvaney praised Bol's current form, stating, "He's probably in the best form of his life." Bol has his sights set on the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, aiming to improve on his silver medal from Birmingham in 2022.
McAvaney noted Bol's positive mindset, attributing it to his role as a father and husband. "He's in a really good mind place. Life's good for him," he said, expressing confidence in Bol's ability to handle the competition on Saturday night.
