Marathon Icon Eliud Kipchoge Set for Melbourne Marathon This October
Olympic legend and former world record-holder Eliud Kipchoge has confirmed his participation in the Melbourne Marathon this October, adding another prestigious event to his illustrious career. The five-time Olympian will make Melbourne the third destination on his ambitious global marathon tour, which aims to encompass seven marathons across all continents worldwide.
Kipchoge's Return to Australian Soil
This marks Kipchoge's second appearance on Australian soil for a marathon event, following his debut last year in Sydney alongside Dutch star Sifan Hassan during the city's inaugural year as a World Marathon Major. Reflecting on his upcoming visit, Kipchoge expressed enthusiasm about reconnecting with the Australian running community.
"Running brings people together across all borders," Kipchoge stated. "I am excited to return to Australia and experience the energy of the Nike Melbourne Marathon Festival. The Australian running community is booming and the passion I experienced here before will stay with me for a lifetime."
He further noted, "I saw that Australia is a real outdoor country with a big love for sports. That is why I can’t wait to come back, experience a new part of this great country and run together with the people of Melbourne and all of Oceania."
Event Director Hails Historic Moment
Marcus Gale, the Melbourne Marathon Festival event director, emphasized the significance of Kipchoge's involvement, describing it as a transformative moment for the event and Australian running at large.
"Having Eliud Kipchoge join us at the Nike Melbourne Marathon Festival is a landmark moment — not just for our event, but for the entire Australian running community," Gale remarked. "Eliud is the greatest marathon runner of all time, and his decision to make Melbourne the official Oceania stop of his world tour is a testament to the strength and passion of our runners and the world-class experience we’ve built here."
He added, "We can’t wait to welcome him to the MCG finish line, and to share that moment with the tens of thousands of runners and spectators who make this event so special."
Course Enhancements for Faster Times
In preparation for the event, organizers have recently implemented route modifications designed to improve race times. Key changes include:
- Elimination of the gradual hill on Birdwood Avenue near the Botanical Gardens
- Addition of extra distance on the flat surface of Beach Road
- Reversal of direction along Beach Road, with runners heading toward Elwood first before returning to Port Melbourne
- Inclusion of a lap around Albert Park Lake on the route back to St Kilda Road and the MCG finish line
Kipchoge's Unparalleled Legacy
Eliud Kipchoge's career achievements solidify his status as a marathon icon:
- Two-time Olympic marathon gold medalist
- Former world record-holder for over five years
- Widely regarded as the greatest marathoner of all time, despite losing the record to Kelvin Kiptum in late 2023
- The only runner in history to break the two-hour marathon barrier, achieving 1:59.40 in an unofficial event under optimal conditions
At 41 years old, Kipchoge continues to inspire runners globally, and his participation in the Melbourne Marathon promises to elevate the event's profile while celebrating the vibrant Australian running culture.
