Canberra's premier running event is gearing up for a monumental leap onto the world stage. The iconic Canberra Times Marathon is set to transform into a major international destination, with the ACT government announcing a strategic partnership through its Major Event Fund for 2026.
A New Chapter for a Canberra Institution
For local runners, the marathon has long been the focal point of the annual calendar, offering the unique experience of racing through the serene and normally bustling Parliamentary Triangle. However, this beloved community event is now poised to join the ranks of legendary global races like Sydney, Chicago, London, and New York.
The partnership with event organisers Sole Motive signals a bold new direction. This move follows a record-breaking turnout for the 2025 event, proving its immense popularity and readiness for expansion. Chief Minister Andrew Barr emphasised the event's proud history and its rightful place among the world's great marathons.
Revitalised Format and Economic Boost
The 2026 festival will mark a significant evolution, introducing a refreshed two-day format and an exciting new course. Runners will now traverse a route that includes Duntroon and the Australian War Memorial, showcasing more of the capital's iconic landscape.
Mr. Barr highlighted that the government's support is designed to catalyse growth, attracting more interstate and international participants. This influx is expected to extend visitor stays and deliver a larger economic benefit for the entire territory. He noted the event has more than doubled in size since 2019, with a high proportion of runners already travelling from other states.
An Iconic Festival Experience
Lisa Holmes, Chief Executive of Sole Motive, stated the collaboration would completely transform the marathon. The goal is to create a truly iconic event that celebrates running and positions Canberra as a world-class destination.
The revitalised program will feature the marathon and half marathon on Sunday, with the 10km, 5km, and Kids Dash moving to the Saturday. An expanded 'event village' will offer food and cultural showcases, creating a festival atmosphere. A boosted national and international marketing campaign will spread the word far and wide.
Registrations for the 2026 Canberra Times Marathon Festival are now open, inviting runners from across Australia and overseas to be part of this exciting new chapter in the nation's capital.
