Essendon Star Zach Merrett Open to Contract Extension After Failed Hawthorn Move
Essendon champion Zach Merrett has publicly confirmed his openness to extending his tenure with the Bombers, though he stopped short of guaranteeing his long-term future at Windy Hill. This comes after a proposed trade to Hawthorn collapsed during the off-season, leaving the six-time Essendon fairest-and-best winner to return to his original club.
Contract Talks in Preliminary Stages
Merrett revealed that preliminary discussions about a contract extension beyond his current deal, which expires in 2027, have already taken place between his management and Essendon officials. However, the 30-year-old midfielder emphasized that these talks remain in their infancy.
"It's something that was briefly spoken about through the last few months, clearly not something I'm thinking about these few days, being away with Victoria, but something that will be ongoing," Merrett stated during a press conference at Kent Street Senior High School in Kensington, Perth.
He added that his immediate focus is on helping Victoria beat Western Australia in upcoming matches, with contract considerations taking a backseat for now.
Stepping Down as Captain
Following his unsuccessful move to Hawthorn, Merrett stepped down as Essendon captain—a decision that reflected the uncertainty surrounding his future. The veteran player was careful to clarify that he is currently in a listening mode regarding contract discussions rather than actively pursuing an extension.
"I wouldn't say considering (it) yet. There's some openness to listen, as there always is, when you're on your back nine of your career," Merrett explained. "You always open with what that could look like but nothing has progressed outside of a very preliminary chat."
Addressing Team Dynamics and Media Scrutiny
Merrett directly addressed concerns about potential tension within the Essendon playing group, particularly with teammates Mason Redman and Nic Martin. Both players had publicly expressed disappointment when Merrett initially sought a trade to Hawthorn.
"I wouldn't say there was strained relationships. No doubt there's a bit of awkwardness just to start with, given what we went through those three months but to Mason and Nick's credit, we had dinner before we went back to make sure we're on the same page," Merrett said.
The midfielder acknowledged the intense media scrutiny surrounding his trade situation, describing it as a "tough experience" while praising the majority of football journalists for their role in the sport's ecosystem.
Looking Forward with Essendon
Despite the off-season drama, Merrett expressed satisfaction with Essendon's recent changes, including the appointment of a new chief executive and revamped fitness department. He remains committed to performing at his best for the Bombers while his contract remains active.
"I'm still contracted for two years, so I still very much feel they're in charge of my career moving forward. The way we've shifted and evolved and compounded some really good decisions in the pre-season, off-season, look really pleasing," he said.
Merrett also dismissed any suggestion of conflict regarding Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell's involvement with Victoria's coaching staff, stating that Mitchell's presence "doesn't affect good or bad" and that he's focused on learning from head coach Chris Scott during the Origin preparations.
