The drama unfolded hours before a single ball was bounced at People’s First Stadium on Sunday night. Prior to Gold Coast’s blockbuster AFL clash with GWS, broadcasters setting up a camera in the Suns coaches’ box accidentally smashed a window.
Accidental Smash Leads to Window Removal
Stadium staff then worked deliberately and safely to push the window out and drop it down to the lower tier. It took four people to dislodge the 200kg sheet of glass from its position and guide it down. Someone filming from the ground captured the moment the entire window screen came crashing down from the elevated box into the grandstand. The laminated glass was removed well before any fans were in the vicinity, ensuring no injuries occurred.
Coach Adjusts to Open Window
Given the incident happened so close to the start of the game, Suns coach Damien Hardwick was forced to coach with an open window. Despite the unexpected disruption, the match proceeded as scheduled. The glass was safely disposed of, and stadium officials are reviewing the incident to prevent future occurrences.
