Leopold has produced a stunning comeback victory in the local football league, with coach Ben Johnson crediting a mid-game wake-up call and the emergence of young guns for the turnaround.
Slow Start Sparks Urgency
The Leopards trailed by 28 points at halftime against a determined Grovedale side, prompting a stern address from Johnson during the main break. "We just weren't playing with enough intensity," Johnson said. "We challenged the group to lift their work rate and trust their system." The message resonated, as Leopold booted nine goals to two in the third quarter to seize control.
Young Guns Step Up
Several under-19 players made significant contributions. Jack Henderson, 18, kicked three goals and provided relentless pressure, while 19-year-old midfielder Tom Atkins amassed 28 disposals and eight clearances. "They've been knocking on the door, and today they showed they belong at this level," Johnson added.
Magnet Moves Prove Crucial
Johnson also made several positional changes that turned the game. Defender Luke Hannon was swung forward and booted two crucial goals, while ruckman Sam McLachlan pushed into the midfield to win clearances. "We needed to shake things up, and those moves paid off," Johnson said.
The win lifts Leopold into the top five, with Johnson emphasizing the need for consistency. "We can't afford slow starts. But the character the boys showed is a sign of a good team."
