A Kalgoorlie couple has been left in shock after welcoming quadruplets, the first set born in Western Australia in six years.
Unexpected pregnancy
Belinda Lotsu was hoping for just one healthy baby daughter after suffering a miscarriage, but instead she fell pregnant with quadruplets, surprising both her and her husband Emmanuel. Ms Lotsu delivered one boy and three girls via caesarean section at King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH) on Tuesday. The babies, named Amy, Amana, Amber, and Amon, are only the fifteenth recorded set of quadruplets to be born in WA and the first in six years.
The couple were already shocked when they were originally told they were expecting triplets, but more than halfway through the pregnancy, scans revealed a fourth baby. “I’m still surprised that I was able to have four babies at one time,” Ms Lotsu said.
Moving to Perth for birth
The couple moved to Kalgoorlie with their three-year-old son two years ago but had to come to Perth to have the babies. All four babies are currently in the neonatal unit at KEMH and should be able to come home in four to six weeks. Older brother Carl is already in love with his siblings, often liking to look at photos of the foursome on his dad’s phone.
Community support
The quadruplets’ father, Emmanuel Lotsu, said they didn’t have any direct family back in Kalgoorlie but had the church and local Ghanaian community for support. “They are the ones we call family over here,” he said.
It was like déjà vu for the team at KEMH, who delivered a set of quadruplets—also three girls and one boy—in 2020. “It’s just a coincidence but it’s amazing really. No matter how long you’re in obstetrics you just never get over how amazing pregnancy and birth can be,” nurse and midwifery coordinator Jourdin Ross said. “I think Belinda is an absolute super woman, she is inspirational to everyone.”
Family complete
When asked if they were planning to have any more kids, Ms Lotsu laughed and said “God will give them to other people who need a baby. We are OK”. “We’ve been married for 16 years and waiting for a kid for many, many years. God has blessed us.”
