Koltyn Tholstrup's Tagging Prowess No Surprise to Former WAFL Mentor
Koltyn Tholstrup's emergence as a tagger in Melbourne's revamped lineup has not caught his former WAFL coach Beau Wardman off guard. The young Demon delivered a standout performance in the season-opening match, effectively neutralizing St Kilda's rising star Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera and playing a pivotal role in Melbourne's unexpected 13-point victory.
A Testament to Character and Discipline
Wardman, who guided Tholstrup during his 10-game stint with Subiaco's league side in 2023 before the Demons selected him with the 13th overall pick in the national draft, praised the 20-year-old's recent efforts. "I thought he broke even with Nasiah and it went a long way towards Melbourne winning the game," Wardman remarked. He highlighted Tholstrup's loyalty, strong family background from Esperance, and the trust he earns from coaches as key factors enabling him to excel in such a demanding role.
"He's worked really hard on his fitness over the last couple of years and he's changed his body shape, so he's competitive in that way. He leaves nothing to chance," Wardman added, underscoring the player's dedication and preparation.
Early Signs of Tagging Talent
Wardman recalled deploying Tholstrup as a tagger in just his second senior WAFL game for Subiaco, where he was tasked with containing Claremont superstar Jye Bolton. Tholstrup limited Bolton to a mere 11 disposals, demonstrating his ability to disrupt even the most seasoned opponents. "He took it right up to a Sandover medallist, a multiple Simpson medallist that day, just getting under his skin," Wardman noted, emphasizing Tholstrup's discipline and adherence to strategic plans.
Future Prospects and Midfield Potential
Looking ahead, Wardman expressed confidence that Tholstrup could eventually secure a permanent midfield position, benefiting from the experience of facing top-tier competition. "In terms of running patterns, work rate, the ability to set up at stoppage, it'll be a really good learning opportunity for him, doing that now," he said. Wardman envisions a natural progression for Tholstrup into midfield or high half-forward roles, where his contest skills would shine.
As Melbourne prepares for upcoming clashes, Wardman suggested that Fremantle's Andrew Brayshaw might be a suitable match-up for Tholstrup, given Brayshaw's strong work ethic, compared to the more challenging task of tagging in-and-under players like Caleb Serong.
Coaching Strategy and Development Focus
Melbourne coach Steven King indicated that Tholstrup's tagging duties would be tailored to specific opponents on a "horses for courses" basis. King reaffirmed the club's commitment to Tholstrup's growth, stating, "He's obviously a highly-talented player, secured at a high pick in the draft, and we're really big on him getting as much exposure as possible." This approach underscores Melbourne's investment in nurturing Tholstrup's talents through varied on-field experiences.
