Serong embraces new role as Dockers stars shine in big win

Fremantle Dockers star Caleb Serong has revealed a surprising shift in his perspective, admitting he now enjoys spending less time in the midfield as teammates Shai Bolton, Murphy Reid and Hayden Young have stepped into the spotlight.

A new dynamic at Fremantle

Serong, who has been one of the AFL's most prolific ball-winners over the past two seasons, has seen his midfield minutes reduced in 2025 as the Dockers look to balance their on-ball brigade. The arrival of Bolton from Richmond, along with the emergence of young gun Reid and the continued development of Young, has allowed Fremantle to spread the load through the engine room.

Speaking after Fremantle's commanding victory, Serong said he has embraced the change. "I love it, to be honest," Serong said. "It's taken some pressure off me, and I'm able to have more impact when I'm in there. The boys have been fantastic."

Bolton and Reid shine

Bolton, who joined the Dockers in a high-profile trade during the off-season, has been a revelation in the midfield. His explosive speed and goal sense have added a new dimension to Fremantle's attack. Meanwhile, Reid, a first-round draft pick, has shown maturity beyond his years, while Young has continued to build on his reputation as a versatile midfielder.

"Shai brings that X-factor, Murph is so clean with his hands, and Hayden just keeps getting better," Serong said. "It's exciting to see what we can do as a group."

Fremantle's midfield depth

The Dockers' midfield depth has been a talking point this season, with coach Justin Longmuir rotating players through the centre bounces. Serong, who averaged over 30 disposals per game in 2024, has seen his numbers dip slightly but remains a key contributor. He finished the match against the Western Bulldogs with 24 disposals and a goal, playing primarily on the wing and forward.

"I'm just happy to be part of a winning team," Serong said. "If that means I play less midfield time, so be it. We've got a lot of talent in there, and we're all pulling in the same direction."

Young's versatility

Hayden Young, who was originally drafted as a half-back, has become a permanent fixture in the midfield. His composure and decision-making have been vital for Fremantle, and he has formed a strong partnership with Serong and Andrew Brayshaw. Young's ability to win clearances and use the ball effectively has made him one of the most improved players in the competition.

"Hayden's been incredible," Serong added. "He's so calm under pressure, and he's really taken his game to another level."

Dockers eye finals push

Fremantle's win has strengthened their position in the top eight, and the midfield depth will be crucial as they push for a deep finals run. With Serong embracing his new role and the emergence of Bolton, Reid and Young, the Dockers look well-equipped to challenge the league's best.

"We're building something special here," Serong said. "We've got a great mix of experience and youth, and everyone's buying into the team-first mentality."
