Alex Pearce to Captain Fremantle Dockers for Fourth Season After Leadership Growth
Pearce to Lead Fremantle for Fourth Consecutive Season

Fremantle Dockers skipper Alex Pearce will lead the club for a fourth consecutive season, with the veteran defender declaring a newfound trust in himself has been the key to his flourishing leadership.

From Doubt to Confidence: Pearce's Captaincy Journey

The club confirmed on Friday, January 16, 2026, that Pearce had been overwhelmingly endorsed by both players and coaches following a career-best season. This season saw him guide Fremantle to the finals for the second time during his tenure as captain.

Reflecting on his three years in the role, Pearce admitted his initial approach was overthought. "I think I've just trusted myself a little bit more, and because of that, things have become a little bit easier," Pearce said. "The first year or so, trying to work out the role and how I was going to make it my own, I think I just thought a little bit too much about it."

He now believes his natural style is what resonates with the team. "Now, I just really trust how I act and how I naturally lead is what my teammates really want and respect," he added, expressing excitement about his continued growth as a leader.

Club Backing and Leadership Group Stability

Fremantle's executive general manager of football, Joe Brierty, stated Pearce received sweeping support from the entire organisation to continue as captain. Brierty praised Pearce's outstanding growth, values, and work ethic, noting they set the club's standard.

Despite external calls for a change, midfield stars Caleb Serong and Andrew Brayshaw will remain as Pearce's joint vice-captains. Pearce highlighted their continual development, saying, "They continue to just grow and improve."

The only addition to the leadership group is defender Jordan Clark, elevated for the first time after an All Australian season in 2025. Pearce expressed pride in Clark's off-field contributions and maturity since joining the club.

A Legacy in the Making

Pearce's memorable match-winning goal against Port Adelaide in round 22 of last season highlighted a year where he played 16 games. He is now the fourth longest-serving captain in Fremantle's history, behind only Matthew Pavlich (nine seasons), Nat Fyfe (six), and Peter Bell (five).

The rest of the eight-player leadership group remains unchanged, with Jaeger O'Meara, Sam Switkowski, Hayden Young, and Josh Treacy all retaining their positions. Pearce emphasised the significance of such a large group, noting it reflects the broad acknowledgement from players and coaches of their strong contributions.

Looking ahead, Pearce is focused on the ultimate prize. "I feel like there's a lot of growth I've got left in me and I'm really excited to keep improving as a leader and hopefully be a part of taking this club forward to the ultimate success," he said.
