Fremantle's Pat Voss Faces Backlash After Taunting Incident
Fremantle forward Pat Voss has been fined $1000 by the AFL for misconduct after taunting Melbourne's Harrison Petty during a recent match. The incident, which involved Voss rubbing Petty's head and making cry-baby motions, has sparked widespread criticism from experts and fans alike.
Teammate Shai Bolton Defends Voss's Fiery Style
Fremantle star Shai Bolton has spoken out in support of Voss, acknowledging that the forward is remorseful for his actions but urging him to maintain his aggressive playing style. Bolton noted that Voss was less vocal than usual during Tuesday's training session at Cockburn ARC, attributing it to the ongoing scrutiny.
"Inside he is still pretty vocal. I think he was just locked in and trying to get through training. Obviously there's stuff going around about him. I think he's pretty remorseful about it," Bolton said. "We like him playing how he is. We know he can get a bit fiery but at the end of the day it is just a game of football."
Melbourne Captain Max Gawn Criticises the Taunting
Melbourne captain Max Gawn, an eight-time All-Australian, expressed his disapproval of Voss's actions, particularly the head-rubbing gesture. Gawn, who was close to the incident during the game, stated that it appeared worse on television than in real time due to the loud crowd noise.
"It looks worse on TV than it did live," Gawn told Triple M. "The crowd is incredibly loud, so I didn't hear anything that Voss said. I just saw what he was doing to his head, which I didn't like."
Gawn added that while he supports some level of banter in AFL games, he believes Voss's behaviour crossed a line. "I'm surprised there was a fine. I didn't know that was a thing. Obviously they're trying to stamp it out. I personally don't do it (taunt), but I don't mind it when my teammates do some sort of it, but not to that extent," he said.
Leadership and Training Responses
Voss has reportedly spoken with Fremantle's leadership group about the incident, reflecting the club's internal efforts to address the controversy. Despite the fine and public backlash, teammates like Bolton emphasise the importance of Voss staying true to his competitive nature, highlighting the balance between passion and sportsmanship in professional football.
