Jack Musika's Heroic Goal Ends South Fremantle's 17-Game Winning Streak
Musika's Goal Ends Bulldogs' 17-Game Streak

In a stunning turn of events at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday, Claremont forward Jack Musika emerged as an unlikely hero, kicking the decisive goal to end South Fremantle's remarkable 17-game winning streak. The 25-year-old's late-game heroics secured a thrilling 11.8 (74) to 9.15 (69) victory for the visitors, silencing the Bulldogs' faithful and marking a pivotal moment in his career.

A Special Moment Against Former Club

Musika, who is not widely recognized among Claremont's star players, described the experience as "special" after scoring the biggest goal of his 35-game career. This achievement held extra significance as it came against South Fremantle, the club that released him nearly five years ago. Having played 33 colts and 13 reserves games for the Bulldogs before being cut in 2021, Musika's winning goal was a poignant redemption story.

"As soon as I got the ball, I knew I had to take my legs and drive. The next thing I knew, I had to take the shot, and luckily enough, it went through," Musika told The West Australian. "It's very special. It was a club that let me go, didn't want me anymore, so to kick the winning goal against them is so special."

Claremont's Dramatic Comeback

The match was a tense affair, with South Fremantle aiming for a club-record 18th consecutive win. They led by 15 points early in the final quarter, seemingly on track for a historic victory. However, Claremont rallied, kicking the last three goals of the game to cause a major upset. Musika's running goal into an open net in the dying moments was the climax of this dramatic comeback, ensuring Claremont remains the only undefeated side in the competition.

Despite a challenging day where he missed two earlier shots in the seesawing contest, Musika remained focused. "It's hard. We talk about wiping things that happen in the past and keep moving on," he said. "In the back of my mind, I knew I'd missed two earlier ones, but luckily I was on the end of one at the end of the game."

Team Belief and Future Prospects

Claremont's victory propels them to a game clear at the top of the ladder, following impressive wins over recent premiers Peel Thunder and South Fremantle. Their next challenge is against in-form East Fremantle, who upset grand finalists East Perth. Musika highlighted the strong team connection as a key factor in their success, contrasting it with last year's heartbreaking preliminary final loss.

"The connection of this young group has been exceptional. We have a lot of belief in our game style and our roles," he explained. "You train all pre-season to get these new roles, but it is the belief amongst the group. Once everyone has your back, everyone goes out there and plays their role, and it just flows through games like today."

This win not only cements Claremont's position as a formidable contender but also showcases the resilience and determination of players like Musika, who seized the moment to deliver a memorable performance.
