Essendon midfielder Zach Merrett is set for an intriguing return to the field, but it will be in the colours of Victoria, not the Bombers, following his selection for February's revived State of Origin match.
Failed Trade Attempt and Captaincy Fallout
The three-time All-Australian and six-time Essendon best and fairest winner left the club in a state of shock earlier this year when it was revealed he sought a move to Hawthorn. Despite being club captain and contracted until the end of 2027, Merrett met with Hawks coach Sam Mitchell to express his desire to leave in pursuit of success.
When the trade period closed without a deal that satisfied Essendon, Merrett was forced to return to Tullamarine. He later admitted to losing "love and connection" with the Bombers, a sentiment that led to his trade request. Last month, he officially relinquished the captaincy, with the role passing to Andrew McGrath.
An Awkward Victorian Reunion
Merrett's selection for the Big V now creates a fascinating and slightly uncomfortable scenario. He will link up in the Victorian midfield with none other than Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell, who is part of the state's coaching setup. The dynamic becomes even more delicate as the head coach of Victoria is Chris Scott – the twin brother of Essendon coach Brad Scott, whom Merrett attempted to leave.
This sets up a compelling triangle for observers when the squad assembles in February, with Chris Scott likely to monitor the interactions between Merrett and Mitchell closely. Merrett remains under contract at Essendon until 2027, but speculation persists that another attempt to join Hawthorn at the end of 2026 has not been ruled out.
Star-Studded Victorian Squad Takes Shape
Merrett is among seven new inclusions announced on Friday for the clash against Western Australia at Perth's Optus Stadium on February 14. The squad is bolstered by the addition of Geelong superstar and captain Patrick Dangerfield, who expressed his excitement at finally representing his state.
"Growing up I dreamt of playing footy, winning premierships and representing Victoria, so when Chris gave me a call to be a part of the return of Origin, I jumped at the opportunity to finally pull on the Big V," Dangerfield said.
The Victorian team also welcomes:
- Fremantle's Caleb Serong
- Western Bulldogs' breakout star Ed Richards
- Hawthorn defenders Josh Battle and Blake Hardwick
- GWS running defender Lachie Ash
The return of State of Origin football promises high stakes and intense rivalry, with Zach Merrett's personal narrative adding a compelling subplot to the Victorian campaign.
