Collingwood Coach Craig McRae Relishes Gabba Challenge Despite Key Absences
Collingwood Magpies coach Craig McRae is approaching Thursday night's blockbuster AFL clash against the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba with unwavering confidence, dismissing any notion of fear and embracing what he calls a "massive test" for his team.
Moore's Absence and Defensive Adjustments
The Magpies will be without captain Darcy Moore, who suffered a fresh hamstring injury in last week's victory over GWS, sidelining him for approximately a month. McRae acknowledged there is no direct like-for-like replacement for the 200cm key defender, but he is backing Collingwood's team defence system to compensate.
"We've had a bit of experience with Darcy being out," McRae said after Tuesday's training session. "We'll go back to a model that we know has worked. Our team defence has been quite strong."
He emphasized that anyone who has watched or played against Collingwood recently would recognize their defensive system's strength, which will be crucial against a Brisbane side renowned for its ball movement.
Injury Updates and Player Availability
While Moore is a significant loss, veteran Scott Pendlebury will also miss the trip. However, there is positive news on other fronts. Defender Jeremy Howe has returned, adding experience to the backline. McRae expressed confidence in the backline's ability to handle Brisbane's attack, noting they have successfully managed similar challenges before, such as against Adelaide with limited key defenders.
Star onballer Nick Daicos appeared proppy at training, but McRae was adamant he would be ready for the Lions. Will Parker is a strong candidate to come into the side as part of the defensive adjustments.
Embracing the Gabba Challenge
McRae cheekily referred to the Gabba as "a good home ground" for Collingwood, highlighting that the Magpies have won their last two games at the venue against the two-time defending premiers. He views this match as an excellent opportunity to gauge the team's early-season form.
"You play against good opposition, you want to bring your A-game," McRae stated. "It's a massive test and it's a great time to get it. Everyone wants to find out where they are."
Player Spotlights: Steene and Hill
One of the highlights from the GWS win was the debut of Oscar Steene, who impressed in the ruck and kicked a goal. McRae noted the challenge ahead for Steene, who must now replicate that performance just six days later.
"The crazy reality he's in now, he has to do it all again six days later," McRae remarked. "That's the hardest thing, and Pendles has done it 430 times, and he's about to do it his second."
After the game, Steene told McRae it was probably the best day of his life, to which the coach responded, "Hopefully he has the best day of his life on Thursday, too."
Meanwhile, Norm Smith Medallist Bobby Hill continues to train well following his belated return to the club. McRae described his progression as good, with two steps forward, including some match play that showcased his signature 'Bobby-dazzle' skills.
"He's a work in progress - again, no timeline, but he's in his pre-season right now," McRae added, indicating Hill is building fitness but not yet ready for selection.
As Collingwood prepares for this crucial early-season showdown, McRae's confidence and strategic adjustments set the stage for a compelling contest against the Lions at the Gabba.
