West Coast Eagles coach Andrew McQualter has opened up on the difficult decision to omit veteran forward Jamie Cripps from the AFL side, describing it as a 'hard' call that was made in the best interests of the team.
McQualter explains the decision
Speaking to reporters on Friday, McQualter said the decision to drop Cripps was not taken lightly, given the 33-year-old's experience and leadership within the group. 'It was a hard conversation to have with Jamie, but these are the decisions we have to make as a coaching staff to ensure we have the right balance and performance levels,' McQualter said.
Cripps, who has played 244 games for the Eagles since his debut in 2013, was omitted from the squad to face Fremantle in the western derby this weekend. The veteran forward has managed just eight goals in seven games this season, and his form has been under scrutiny.
Team balance and form
McQualter emphasised that the decision was based on form and the need to give opportunities to younger players. 'We have a number of young players pushing for selection, and we felt it was the right time to give them a chance. Jamie understands that, and he's taken it in his stride,' he said.
The Eagles coach also highlighted the importance of maintaining a competitive edge within the squad. 'We need everyone to be performing at their best, and if someone isn't quite there, we have to make those tough calls. It's about what's best for the team,' McQualter added.
Cripps' reaction
According to McQualter, Cripps has responded professionally to the news. 'He's a true professional. He's disappointed, as you'd expect, but he's already working on his game to earn his spot back. That's the kind of character he is,' McQualter said.
The Eagles will face Fremantle at Optus Stadium on Saturday, with several changes expected to the lineup. McQualter confirmed that young forward Jack Williams will come into the side, while midfielder Elliot Yeo will also return from injury.
Looking ahead
McQualter said the door remains open for Cripps to return to the side. 'Jamie has been a fantastic servant of this club, and we have no doubt he can get back to his best. It's up to him to go back to the WAFL, perform, and force his way back in,' he said.
The Eagles are currently 14th on the ladder with a 3-4 record, and McQualter is hoping the changes will spark a turnaround in form. 'We need to be better, and we're making the changes we think are necessary to get there,' he concluded.
