West Coast Eagles wingman Ryan Maric has called on his teammates to take greater responsibility for executing interim coach Andrew McQualter's game plan, as the club looks to bounce back from a disappointing start to the AFL season.
Maric backs McQualter's methods
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Maric said the playing group fully supported McQualter's approach and that it was up to them to deliver on the field. "We've got full belief in what 'Macca' is bringing," Maric said. "It's on us as players to go out there and execute it."
The Eagles have won just one of their first four games under McQualter, who took over from Adam Simpson in the off-season. Despite the slow start, Maric insisted the squad remained united and confident in the game plan.
Focus on fundamentals
Maric highlighted the need for the team to focus on the basics, particularly contested ball and defensive pressure. "We've been working hard on our contested footy and our pressure around the ball," he said. "If we can get those fundamentals right, the rest will follow."
The 21-year-old, who has played every game this season, said the group was determined to turn things around. "We know we haven't been good enough, but there's a real hunger to improve," Maric added.
Young guns stepping up
Maric also praised the development of the club's younger players, including Harley Reid and Reuben Ginbey, who have been among the Eagles' best performers. "The young guys are really stepping up and taking on leadership roles," he said. "It's exciting to see them grow."
West Coast will look to secure their second win of the season when they face the Gold Coast Suns at Optus Stadium on Saturday. Maric said the team was eager to reward their fans with a strong performance. "We owe it to our supporters to put in a four-quarter effort," he said.
The Eagles currently sit 16th on the ladder, with only one win from their opening four matches. A victory against the Suns would provide a much-needed boost to their campaign.
