In a significant leadership reshuffle, the West Coast Eagles have elevated utility Liam Baker to share the club's captaincy with Liam Duggan for the upcoming AFL season.
New Co-Captain Announced
Baker will assume the co-captain role in just his second season with the Eagles, marking a rapid rise within the club's hierarchy. This appointment comes as former co-captain Oscar Allen departed for Brisbane as a free agent following an injury-plagued 2025 season.
Liam Duggan will continue his captaincy duties for a third consecutive season, providing continuity alongside the fresh leadership perspective Baker brings.
Immediate Impact Recognised
West Coast's head of football John Worsfold highlighted Baker's immediate influence since joining the club from Richmond. "Since joining the club, Liam Baker has had an immediate impact with his training standards, his ability to connect with teammates and all staff, and his communication and passion to see the club achieve on-field success," Worsfold stated.
"It was no surprise he was seen as a worthy captain through the players' leadership vote."
Baker's credentials were solidified last season when he won the club's best-and-fairest award during his debut year in Western Australia after seven seasons with Richmond.
Expanded Leadership Group
The Eagles have also refreshed their broader leadership structure, announcing a seven-strong leadership group that includes several notable additions and retentions.
New Faces in Leadership
Brandon Starcevich, a former Brisbane premiership player who is yet to make his Eagles debut, has been immediately included in the leadership group. "Brandon's leadership qualities have impacted our young squad immediately," Worsfold explained.
"Coming from Brisbane's leadership group, he adds valuable nous and experience from within a two-time premiership squad. With that knowledge and his own quiet but strong values base, his teammates nominated him for their leadership group without question."
The leadership group also welcomes new additions Reuben Ginbey and Matt Flynn, while Jake Waterman and another former Richmond premiership player Jack Graham retain their positions.
Shared Leadership Approach
Worsfold emphasised the strategic thinking behind the co-captaincy model. "Co-captaincy will allow both players to mentor their teammates in the most effective way ... whilst still focusing on their individual preparation and performance."
This leadership restructure signals West Coast's commitment to blending experienced guidance with fresh perspectives as they prepare for the challenges of the new AFL season.
