West Australian football great Ken Hunter has called for a mental health round that encompasses all levels of the sport, from grassroots to the AFL. The former West Coast Eagles captain and three-time premiership player believes that mental health initiatives should not be limited to the elite level but should be accessible to everyone involved in football.
Importance of Inclusive Mental Health Support
Hunter emphasized that mental health challenges affect players, coaches, and volunteers at every tier of the game. He argued that a dedicated round would raise awareness and provide resources for those who may not have access to support systems. "It's crucial that we look after the mental well-being of everyone in the football community, not just the professionals," Hunter said.
Grassroots Focus
The 59-year-old, who played 200 games for the Eagles and represented Western Australia, highlighted the pressures faced by amateur players and local clubs. He noted that grassroots footy often lacks the infrastructure to address mental health issues, making a league-wide initiative vital. "We need to ensure that local clubs have the tools to support their members," he added.
Current Initiatives and Gaps
While the AFL has implemented mental health programs, Hunter pointed out that these often do not trickle down to community football. He praised existing efforts but stressed the need for a more coordinated approach. "A dedicated round would bring attention to the resources available and encourage clubs to prioritize mental health," he explained.
Call to Action
Hunter urged football governing bodies to collaborate with mental health organizations to create a sustainable framework. He suggested that a mental health round could include fundraising, education sessions, and access to counseling services. "This is about saving lives and making the game stronger," he concluded.
The call comes amid growing awareness of mental health issues in sport, with several AFL players speaking out about their struggles. Hunter hopes that a comprehensive approach will set a precedent for other sports to follow.
