Hunter football mourns loss of beloved icon Chris Turner

The Hunter football fraternity is in mourning after the sudden death of Chris Turner, a much-liked former player, coach, administrator and broadcaster. Turner died on Friday after a medical episode, leaving the community devastated.

"We are heartbroken to share that our husband and Dad, Chris, has passed away," Turner's wife, Felicity, posted on Facebook. "There are no words to describe our devastating loss but knowing he's back with our boy gives us some peace. We will love and miss him forever. We appreciate you giving us some time to process this and will announce funeral arrangements once we know."

Turner's death follows that of his son, Charlie, in February 2025. Newcastle Football and Zone League Football were among many groups to pay tribute to the popular figure, affectionately known as CT.

"The Zone Football League fraternity and the entire Newcastle Football family have lost a colleague, a true friend, a mentor and an icon of local football," Newcastle Football posted on social media. "Words cannot describe the feeling that we have, knowing that CT will not be with us anymore. We are all overwhelmed with sorrow for Felicity and his beautiful girls Holly and Sophie. We cannot comprehend how they are coping so soon after the loss of [son] Charlie. CT was a footballer, pure and real. Passionate toward the promotion of our game and to his region. Beyond gracious with his time and loyal beyond measure. He leaves more than any legacy can hope for."

Zone League and Newcastle Football League games will proceed this weekend, with many clubs expected to honour the memory of Turner. "We are beyond devastated, football is almost an after thought, but the games will proceed, across every venue, at all levels. Roll the cameras, turn on the mikes."

Turner was most recently a commentator of NNSW NPL games and had a connection with dozens of clubs. He is survived by his wife Felicity and daughters Holly and Sophie.
