Fremantle Dockers Star Hayden Young Ruled Out of Melbourne Clash After Latest Injury Blow
Fremantle Dockers midfielder Hayden Young has been sidelined for the upcoming AFL match against Melbourne this Saturday night due to a hamstring strain, marking another setback in his ongoing soft tissue injury struggles. The club confirmed the news on Wednesday afternoon, revealing that Young will miss the Dockers' first game of the season at Optus Stadium.
Injury Details and Club Statement
Young reported "awareness" in his hamstring during Fremantle's recent loss to Geelong, though he managed to complete the game. Following scans earlier this week, the club diagnosed a low-grade hamstring strain. Fremantle football boss Joe Brierty stated, "Youngy reported some awareness against Geelong, but he remained functional and was able to play out the game. With ongoing awareness early in the week, he was sent to scans, which have revealed a hamstring strain. While the strain is low-grade, given Hayden's history, we will gather all the information and assess him functionally over the next week before setting his return to play timeline."
History of Soft Tissue Injuries
This latest injury adds to a series of soft tissue problems for the 25-year-old, who played only nine games last season due to hamstring issues that required surgery in May, followed by a groin injury later in the year. In an effort to overcome these persistent troubles, Young and teammate Sean Darcy visited the renowned Aspetar rehabilitation clinic in Doha late last year to work with performance rehabilitation specialist Dr. Enda King.
Impact on Fremantle Dockers
Young's absence further depletes Fremantle's lineup, as he joins other key players like defender Brennan Cox (calf) and veteran Jaeger O'Meara on the sidelines. In the loss to Geelong, Young contributed 16 disposals and a goal, and his recovery timeline will now be closely monitored ahead of potential availability for the match against Richmond on Saturday, March 28.
Opportunity for Jeremy Sharp
With Young out, wingman Jeremy Sharp is poised for a potential call-up after delivering a strong performance in a pre-season game for Peel Thunder. Reports indicate that Sharp excelled as an inside midfielder, showcasing his versatility beyond his traditional role on the wing where his power running has been a standout feature.
This injury development underscores the challenges Fremantle faces early in the AFL season as they navigate player availability and aim to maintain competitive form.
