Full-Strength Beer to Stay at Newcastle Stadium After Positive Trial Results
Fans attending sporting events at Newcastle's McDonald Jones Stadium can now enjoy full-strength beer permanently, following a successful state government trial conducted last year. This decision marks a significant shift from previous restrictions that limited spectators at Western Sydney and Hunter venues to mid-strength options, while those at Sydney Cricket Ground and Allianz Stadium had access to stronger beverages.
Addressing Regional Disparities in Alcohol Sales
The move to continue full-strength beer sales comes after Labor MP for Riverstone, Warren Kirby, highlighted what he described as an unfair east versus west divide in stadium alcohol policies. In response, the state government initiated a six-month trial during the 2025 NRL and A-League seasons to assess the impact of selling full-strength beer at selected venues.
The trial results revealed that intoxication rates at the western Sydney venues remained steady at 0.031 per cent of attendance, despite annual increases in crowd numbers. This data supported the decision to make the change permanent, with safety measures in place to ensure responsible consumption.
Safety Measures and Patron Guidelines
To maintain a safe environment, patrons will be limited to purchasing a maximum of four full-strength beers per transaction, as agreed upon through consultations with NSW Police and sports and entertainment partners. Authorities have also encouraged attendees at major events across the state to consume alcohol responsibly and plan their travel accordingly to avoid drinking and driving.
Venues NSW chief executive Kerrie Mather emphasized the importance of providing patrons with choices and a range of food and drink options at stadiums. "Delivering the best event-day experience remains our key priority, and we can continue to do so through valuable feedback from our fans," she stated, underscoring the organization's commitment to enhancing spectator enjoyment while prioritizing safety.
This policy update not only addresses previous regional inequities but also aligns with broader efforts to improve the overall fan experience at sporting venues in New South Wales.
