Fremantle Dockers Poised to Deploy Luke Jackson as Full-Time Midfielder

The Fremantle Dockers are preparing a strategic shift that could see versatile tall Luke Jackson unleashed as a permanent inside midfielder for the 2026 AFL season. This move follows the late-season acquisition of Collingwood premiership player Mason Cox, which provides the Dockers with enhanced ruck options.

Jackson Embraces Midfield Challenge

Luke Jackson has expressed enthusiasm about the potential role change, highlighting his pre-season focus on mastering the intricacies of inside midfield play. "It excites me," Jackson remarked. "I love the idea of playing everywhere on the ground. I've probably spent more time inside mid this pre-season, learning running patterns and all that goes into it. Ruck comes naturally, but I'm still working on the midfield."

Standing at 199cm, Jackson's athleticism and ability to run and jump make him a formidable prospect in the midfield. He has been actively learning from Dockers vice-captains and elite inside midfielders Caleb Serong and Andrew Brayshaw, alongside assistant coach Joel Corey and teammate Hayden Young.

Cox Addition Reshapes Ruck Dynamics

The arrival of 211cm Mason Cox has introduced a new dimension to Fremantle's ruck group. During recent match simulations, Cox, Sean Darcy, and Jackson all took turns in the ruck, with Jackson also spending significant time as an inside midfielder. Jackson praised Cox's experience and communication, noting how it benefits his own game positioning.

"Coxie has been a great addition," Jackson said. "He's played in a premiership side and brings everything needed to play a great role for us. I'm building chemistry with him and Swag (Darcy) every week."

Addressing Midfield Needs and Building on 2025

The Dockers' squad appears well-rounded with depth in forward, backline, and midfield areas. However, the need for a big-bodied midfielder alongside Hayden Young has been a point of discussion, and Jackson could be the ideal solution. Fremantle finished the previous home-and-away season strongly but were narrowly eliminated in their only final by Gold Coast.

Jackson emphasized the team's internal focus and ambitions: "We don't listen to outside noise much. Every team has expectations, and we want to go further. We got a taste of finals footy, and that's where we all want to play."

Key Players to Watch in 2026

Jackson also highlighted several teammates poised for standout seasons. He tipped defender Heath Chapman to reach another level, described Hayden Young as one of the competition's most exciting players when fit, and anticipated further improvement from last year's AFL Rising Star, Murphy Reid.

"Young adds a different dynamic to the midfield, especially as a left-footer," Jackson noted. "Murph does exciting things and will build on his Rising Star year, playing multiple roles for us."

This strategic repositioning of Luke Jackson underscores Fremantle's proactive approach to optimizing their lineup, aiming to leverage his unique skills in the midfield while capitalizing on their strengthened ruck department for the upcoming AFL campaign.
