A dramatic fiery crash on the Hume Highway in Western Sydney has left two people injured after a sedan split in half and burst into flames.
The incident occurred around 9:30 PM on Thursday night when a 24-year-old man's vehicle struck a power pole near Farrell Road in Villawood. According to NSW Police, the force of the impact snapped the pole in half, bringing down power lines and blocking the entire highway for four hours.
The driver managed to escape the wreckage with burns and suspected fractures. Bystanders assisted him until an ambulance arrived, and he was subsequently transported to Royal North Shore Hospital for treatment.
The rear of the sedan also struck a hatchback traveling west, with the rest of the vehicle landing approximately 200 meters from the impact site at the pole. The hatchback driver, a 48-year-old man, sustained injuries and was taken to Liverpool Hospital for assessment.
The Hume Highway is expected to be fully reopened by 7:00 AM Friday morning, following cleanup and repairs to the damaged power infrastructure.
This incident highlights the dangers of road accidents involving power poles, which can cause significant damage and disruption. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
